Well I took a closer look at the old 75 today. I have been noticing somebody had blown away a bunch of sand around a rock in the front corner under the large cladialla . When i looked closer, i see a bunch of orange wavy eggs on top of the piece of base rock. Son of a gun. That pair of ORA Saddle Back clowns i bought from BJ at Fish Bowl a few years ago have started spawning. Or at least i just noticed. they are 3 years old? or more. I dont know, I can’t remember. I only scraped the front glass just a couple weeks ago to see in so they may have been spawning long before this.
So now i got two pairs of spawning clowns. My old Percs and now the nice big Saddle Backs.
More mouths to feed. I got to dig a basement under the house for a fish room.
hey ken have you tried to raise then yet? Mine spawn constantly it gets quite annoying actually, I can tell by the anemone it is smaller when they spawn they keep biting it to keep it away from the eggs. I want to try to grow them ones a goldstripe and one is white it could be a cool mix.
Well a couple years ago i raised a couple hundred regular Percs. thatwas fun. but im not set up or supplied with the algae paste and roti cuture to raise thes now. looks like the egges hatche the other night. all gone. so i will wait to see when they spawn again and guage their cycle. It would be nice to raise the saddle backs. Barbara raised a bunch of them a couple years back. nice fish. they get bigger and fiestier than other clown fish. lots of personality too. Mine have to fend off a large scopas tang, mongrel damsel, and large bristle tooth tang, who want to eat their eggs. they will learn to protect their eggs. They are pretty tough.
Well, here we go again. I lost one of the saddle backs a year or more ago, when it decided to take a carpet nap one night. But my 9 year old pair of percs in my frag tank are still spawning regularly. about four years straight now. and now i have a second pair of fish in the frag tank that look like they just mated.
I;ve had one Banggai Cardinal in there for a year or so, and lost 2 other mates i tried to introduce for it. the new one always died the next day from being chased and picked at… It seems they were all girls. but a month ago i got a big burly one from DPA and tried once more, and they matched up right away. so it looks like the big one is Dad and seems to be carrying eggs in his mouth. looks like he has the mumps and not eating. cant, got a mouth full.
so here we go again. not sure if i will raise them if they hatch in 3 weeks. might. just have to hatch lots of brine shrimp eggs for them .
They are not too difficult. just need fresh hatched brine shrimp every day, 7 times a day. for the first 3 months. then they wean onto other foods. they like a calm low flow small tank. I think this first batch might be small. a full grown adult male can hold only about 35-40 eggs or fry in his mouth. so thats the upper limit on hatch size. hes not too puffed out in the cheeks, so i say 15-20 maybe this time. we shall see.
