Im new to the website so i thought i would introduce myself. My name is John Salasin and my father an I have recently (3 months) started a SW aquarium. I have been looking for a good club for a little bit now and i think this is the right one for my father and I.
I have a 38g tank with 2 mated perc clowns, 2 yellowtail blue damsels. I have some pulsing xenia and a green striped mushroom (somewhere in tank he is). I have PC lighting so i only get a mere 5 watts per gallon. But from what i have read that is enough for some corals.
I like the hobby a lot. I noticed there is a meeting tonight at William Penn. Thats about 20 min from us so i will try to stop by and see everyone for the first time. At the meeting do we just walk in the front entrance? where will it be held in the school…
I am wanting to start another 20 gallon long tank with a 10 gal sump/refug sometime. i have the return pump and sand and LR. All i need to do is set up piping.
Well just wanted to say hello to everyone, maybe i will see you guys tonight.
I would like to add Acans, paly, chalice, brain corals… would i be able to do this my book says they can all do low light with some doing a little better under moderate light…
First - the neetings are held in the caafeteria in the school. Through the front doors and immediately caddy-corner to your right.
PC lighting is good for mushrooms but I would not reccomend trying to keep much else under them. Especially not Acans or Brains. I’ve tried it - it doesn’t work. You can get a good high-output T5 fisxture that wil enable you to keep most everything at a reasonable price now.
This is a great place to learn as we have a ton of members with years and years in the hobby, we have some members that have only been in the hoby for a few weeks / months and are still learning. The best way to learn is to share and ask questions. We’ve all been new and we’ve all made beginner mistakes so don’t ever worry about which questions you’re asking.
Hey welcome. This club is really nice people, with alot of knowledge. Im sure youll find that out if you go to the meeting!!!
As for your tank, post a picture or two. and ill second cdangel0 with the no brain, but the paly’s you can absolutely keep in that tank!! If you post a pic or post dimensions we can get a better feeling about how much light is in your tank. I cant speak for everyone now adays, but wats per gallon i would assume is a thing of old. Dues to many factors and especially 24w of pc isnt the same output as 24w T5HO. and depth really plays a big part.
As far as the LFS(Local Fish Stores) check the link at the top of the page for local stores. I’ll send you a PM with some comments, but seriously should go on a road trip one day and check some more out.
MACNA would be well worth the trip, but be warned. Many of the best vendors in the US will be there… IE you’ll be spoiled after you visit and much of the local stuff will never look the same, lol.
Please try not to go overboard at either MACNA or the new LFS you find. Your lights are still pretty dim for many of the animals and your tank has more maturing to do. I personally don’t think acans would be a good choice now. I don’t have a lot of hands on experience with acans, but they may prove to be a little delicate.(also if that condy anemone gets anywhere near them the anemone will win the battle)
Feel free to start new threads with questions you might have. Hope we can help more.
