newish tank musings

So,
thanks to the winning raffle, the chemiclean ran for 2 days, followed by 20% water change…and now several days later, all traces of the dreaded red slime have vanished.
I have also noticed 2 species of snails… which research has shown to be Stomatella. Very cool, oh and the pods are running amuck!

Congrats sounds like a step in the right direction. ::thumbsup::

that’s GREAT!!! ::thumbsup::

Cool ::thumbsup:: do you have the white or black variety of the snails?

I’ll try to get pics next time i see them. 1 is just a plain brownish color. The other 2 are cool, black with grey/silver markings…
Very cool YahoO

They are a cool hitchhiker, and always seem to be busy munching stuff. good member of the CuC. Their shell looks like a watermelon seed to me. I also have ones in my tank that are pure white. I’ve never seen them for sale… anybody else? or are they strictly hitchers?

It might be hard to sell Stomatella. Little hard to keep them still in a retail tank and if you tried to sell them on a website I could see forums bashing you. It would be like selling Amphipods, some people may want them and may be willing to pay for them, but really all you need is a decent amount of live rock and a healthy aquarium. I have hundreds and hundreds of these cleaning the walls of my aquariums at the moment.

I never had a big population boom of theses guys, they just maintain a small colony. I have seen the larger sized ones spawning before… maybe they’re getting eaten, or just thrive better with diff conditions. I do have zillions of those tiny tiny snails whose name i always forget, they look like baby withe turbos… they cover the glass at night.
they could be out competing them for food? duno
jon, do you have any other species booming in that tank, or are the stoma’s the main one? ::thinking::

Any other species booming? lol. There are some acroporas I refer to as “weedy acro” , Montipora capricornis that is no question weedy, and at least 50 other species of coral booming. I can’t wait until the frag swap so I can free up some space!

For some reason my clove polyps growth rate is not what I would like it to be and my yellow sponge that I had tons of a couple of months ago has declined a little since I’ve been too busy to dose phyto. While my RBTA has quadroppled in size it hasn’t split on me yet, so not everything is booming, but enough. :wink:

I am sure you mean of tiny hithiking crustaceans. I have mysis shrimp, sea stars, and amphipods galore. It’s amazing what I deep sand bed… opps I mean a bare bottom tank will do for microfauna in an aquarium. :wink:
