Wow every where I look on the boards whether here or RC, there is an abundace of people with problems with fish or corals. Most of these if a proper QT was setup and maintained for a proper time would either not exist or would could be spotted and treated with out fouling the main tank. When I added my Hippo tang to my system there were a few chromis and a yellow tang. He got ick and I had to tear the tank apart to treat him and the rest of the fish because he liked to share. If I QTed him it would have been easier and less stressfull to the fish. Now every fish goes to a Qt for at least 2 weeks.
Even now with people trading corals from one tank to another, the amount of parasites and bugs being spread is bad. I know of 3 tanks right now that have red bugs.
So for the next meeting maybe we could talk about proper Qt setups and the amount of time for a proper Qt. Also we can talk about dips for corals and some of the parasites and hitchhikers to look out for. I figure Jon and alemab3 (Mike) if available could cover these topics.
Hey Al, Wont be able to make this meeting, but I would agree, and a good discussion topic…
having a qt up and running is VERY useful. For instance- I came home last night to find my anemone had decided to move (ironically the same day I found a pair of clowns for sale)and was stuck to a powerhead ( No main body damage fortunately)… since my tank is mostly SPS I have a pretty high flow going through. no matter what I tried I couldn’t find a spot to put the anemone to recuperate. I have been in the process of tearing my frag tank down and was considering draining it… glad I didn’t!!! I found a cozy spot for him and was glad to see he had already reattached to a rock this morning…
Just a thought- for those who cant make it to meetings it might be cool to have someone become the recorder of meetings and post the notes online as a meeting presentation or something. I know the recorder is a pretty crappy job, but over time it would be a great knowledge base for the club…
Eric
Maybe we should post a list of suggested meeting topics. I know im really looking forward to the DIY rock meeting, and I would definatley be interested in hearing a few lectures on coral dips and the like.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, Having someone video the meeting like fragging, making sumps whatever the topic might be and post it like on youtube or something, not sure how it could be posted on here so just members could view it. Iv watched a couple groups on youtube with fragging and misc things for reef tanks and its pretty kool. But anyway its just a suggestion, wouldnt have to record the hole meeting just the work in progress parts. So everyone wouldnt be in the video, for those that are shy.

Funny you mentioned this, have you been reading my pm’s to Jon? He is bringing a camcorder to video the fragging.
That rock demo would also be a cool one to video with a little time lapse.
Well I asked Al and a couple people right before the fragging demo if I should record it for the web, but it didn’t seem like anyone really cared for it. What I didn’t mention was I had borrowed a really expensive top of the line high definition video camera from the school and had it sitting in my car. Oh well perhaps I will get lucky and it will be available next month.
I really really do want to talk to the group about QTing things they bring into there tanks. “I got hair algae from this store.” “I got aptasia from that frag swap.” “I got ick from his fish.” NO you got all of your problems because you did not qt. I’ll also tell the group why it is simply not true that ick is always in salt water and present the hard facts with documentation as to why this is true. If anyone would like to debate the topic with me I would love to hear it, but as of yet ich does not live in all of my tanks accept for the qt tank I just set up.
Looks like I will present again at the next meeting then if people really want to hear about it, but lets have another topic as well to keep things interesting.
Good topic Jon. You are right Ick doesn’t just happen. Ick takes time, ick takes contamination, ick takes opportunity. You might check with the Atlanta Aquarium. According to their site, they fought it too when first filled up and stocked. now they too QT everything. We need some simple rules to follow.
So we dont get so … You know.
Icky!
