Yeah, that looks like it would work pretty nice in one of our tanks. The only problem is that I think that particular one is probably pretty inefficient due to the way its set up. It will produce a very nice wave, but it will also suck up a lot of electricity for the job. You might want to look into a tunze wavebox… or a DIY version of one. It can produce similar results, but should be much more efficient.
I’m not sure that is even automatic. Looks like he is manually moving the thingy back and forth causing the wave. I am ssuming (have to as I can’t make it larger here at work) that the thing in the tank runs the whole width of the tank botttom making it next to impossible to have a sand bed or any rockwork without creating an egg crate shelf to keep everything on.
i havent really thought about using a wave maker yet, but i think the technology is neat. I’m not 100% sure how this system works but somewhere on there it says they actually do use this set up at larger aquariums. So im guessing with a larger volumn of water you wouldnt have to worry about things getting thrown around.

I’ll stick to my wave2k
I think it’s automatic, I don’t think theres anything running along the bottom. That thing is just something floating around to show the flow I’m guessing. There’s two inlets on either side of the tank that run back to the box that hes turning a knob on.
In the comments they mention something about PLCs. I was thinking of setting up a PLC based system for my tank, not just for a wave maker, but for everything (think RK2). It would be a bit more $$ off the bat, but the upgradability and customizability would be a huge score for me.

x2. seems tough to set up in a tank with substrate and/or rockwork… maybe good in a frag tank, under the shelves. but then wouldnt the shelves disrupt the water movement???

It is a good concept however, that is a lot of stress to be putting on a tank!!! Water is heavy!
I wonder what a tank manufacturer would think. They put all those warnings not to more the tank with any water in it at all, lol. I think they’d have a heart attack.
The power draw of that pump has to be huge it has to be at least 200 watts. If you leave that on 24 hours that would be $21 per month just for that pump.
That is very stressful on the tank. Even the wave 2k is not recommended by manufactures and its wave is much more gentile. There would be mega flow through the center low area of the tank just to make the wave. Lots of wasted energy and probably too much flow right in the line of those outlets.
It is automated as he is dialing the wave in on a control box.
