I did get familiar with Pismo Beach clams when i lived out there. They make a great chowder.

every fall, they have a clam/chowder festival in town. not much to speak of, its a small beach town, but they make the chowder in big 50 gallon pots on the sidewalks. good stuff on a cool, foggy day.

as a matter of fact, ken, we just made some chowder last night out of huge surf clams called quohogs or something like that. ugly bstrds they are, not like the lovelies reefers keep.

Oh yeah, that was going to be my next sugestion. those are Geoduck or Gooey Duck clams. they farm them in tidal mud flats up around seattle or someplace in the north west. sposed to be real good. it take them 3-4 years to get that size. I watched Mike Rowe spend a day knee deep in mud havesting them on his show, Dirty Jobs. Almost as expensive as Abalone.
You could keep a gooey duck in your fuge to filter the water, but since their siphon can be up to 3 feet long, your gonna need a pretty deep sandbed. Abalone, however will eat all your hair algae. and when either gets too big for the tank, it’s barbeque time!
