One more question

Any idea of where I could find two mated pair of black clowns if I wanted to go that route? I have seen sites that have mated perc’s and ocellaris clowns, but never black ocellaris clown pairs… Any ideas?

Thanks guys!!

just buy two juveniles. i got a pair from DPA a while back and although i wouldnt call them a mated pair, i think they are well on their way. it will start to become obvious after about 6-12 months becuase the one will not grow noticeably and the other will grow considerably. when i bought my black occs they were identical in size and not the one is about a 1/2" longer. you can also do it by introducing a juvi clown to an established mature clown. thats what i did with my maroon. i had my F maroon for going on 4 years when i bought a juvi about a year ago. she took to him instantly and grew more in the last year than she did in the first four years. very interesting fish. getting clowns to pair up is fairly easy. getting them to spawn is another story.

the only thing i would suggest with black occs is to not buy them together the same time. i did this and now im regretting my decision. if your buying CB(which you should) and you purchase them at the same place/time there is probalby a good chance that they are from the same genetic stock which could cause problems down the road. bellamy(icy) had mentioned in a previous thread that ORA clowns are notorious for not spawning or when they do having small and problematic clutches. after some thought it makes a lot of sense since most people probably buy their fish at the same time with a high likely hood of the fish coming from the same genetic stock.

If you are ready to hatch eggs and have your breeding set up ready you can purchase a “mated pair”. Personally I would follow Shawn’s advice and let a pair develop from two small unsex individuals. Oh and if you’re in a rush you might be in the wrong hobby.)

If you wait a year and stay posted to the forums you might luck out and find a pair for sale, but typically they are sold in less then 5 minutes.

I already have one Mated pair as I said in previous posts. I was wondering if anyone knew where to buy a good mated pair of black ocellaris clowns that’s all. I am well aware of how to raise clowns from baby’s (thats what I did w/ my first two who seem like they will spawn soon.)

Ken has helped me get ready for the whole spawning process b/c of my pair. (Thank you again Ken!!!) This is why I would like to get a mated pair of black clowns. If I have everything set up… why not try to raise as many as I can  (This hobby helps keep my mind off school which I like lol)

And about the rushing thing… I am in no rush  Just like developed clowns more than juvies. I’ve raised my original pair, helped Lindsay with her’s and also Raised two pairs for my father so… I enjoyed that phase… but from my experience, I’d rather just have guys that have gone through all the annoying phases and are ready to relax in the tank w/ their nice anemone and swim freely w/o fear  (Not wait a few months for them to host and wonder why a bunch of tank bread clowns that are 3 months old wont host w/ my anemones lol)

I share this hobby w/ many people obviously :)… but as in any hobby, we all have our own ways and own experiences, yet we can all share in our love for what we do!

honestly… i think u should do what u want. and not feel like u need to explain yourself. BUT… u did ask for advice/opinions. ouch, this is a tough one. :SURRENDER

O i know  I’ll find what I want lol. I always do! (Just takes time) And its not so much defending myself, rather just explaining where I come from… basically the same thing lol But… I only wanted to know if anyone knew where to find a pair, not so much if I should get them or not.

Just for the record I asked where not if I should

LA has two pairs of ORA black occs right now. one pair is $130 the other is $180.

guys that have gone through all the annoying phases and are ready to relax

just a heads up. it is fairly common for a spawning pair of fish to stop spawning when moved to a new aquarium and in some cases for an extended period of time. your going to pay a premium for a pair of fish sold as a “mated pair” and it still may take months or more for them to resume spawning behavior after a transition to a new tank. if your going to put them in a species tank it probably wont be as much of an issue but still something to think about since your anxious to see results.

I Totally forgot about the diver’s den for fish :stuck_out_tongue: Thank you for pointing that out to me  I always look at what kinds of anemones and corals they have and always forget about the fish lol… Thank you very much, and I see they have a lot of pairs there  Even my favorite of all the clowns (yet too expensive) in the picasso perc’s

Not that it will help you with a B&W pair, but if you want to look @ picasso’s, check out http://donisreef.com/ .

Picasso’s are my favorite  (If I save up… and am willing to wait for a good pair that would be my dream clowns :)) But… being in college, money is not that available as it is after setting up the tank and having everything running :stuck_out_tongue:
