Well it seems bumping my dkh up and pulling air from outside through the air intake of the skimmer has raised my ph. Now I need to make it permanent I want to use a 3/4 PVC pipe from outside to the basement just below my tank. Then pipe the 1/4 Ro tubing from that to the skimmer but i am worried about contaminants from outside. How can I filter the air to remove them. Ken I know u have a similar setup
Simple floss in the pipe would be quick effective fix
Floss?? Will that filter chemicals I was thinking some kinda carbon
The only way I can think of doing it cheaply would be to make a mini fluidized bed. use a small media reactor with the outside hose connected to the “input” end, and the hose connected to your skimmer to the “output” side. Place some activated carbon into the reactor, and fill 1/2 to 3/4 the way with regular water. The air from the outside will come in, bubble up through the water and carbon, and come out the top. I’m not sure how effective this will be, but other than a physical filter (filter pad/sock/air filter) I can’t think of a better chemical filter at the moment.
The only other thought I have is to use a crankcase vent filter. They’re small, easily adaptable to most tubing, washable, and cheap. Most are under $10.
No, I dont do that. my seaclone skimmers just draw their air from the funky old sump area they live in. but outside air is a good idea. What do you think you need to filter out of the outside air? Do you live next to the refinery or dupont? Carbon would be a good choice.
There is a plant nearby. About 400 yards. I also am afraid of pesticides fertilizer etc. How can I incorporate carbon just dry aquarium carbon in a canister?? Better safe than sorry don’t want to chance anything.
More important if you have a furnace, boiler Flew Pipe or gas vent move it far away as possible.
