thanks, bill. he’s about 3-4 inches. keep in qt for at least a week.

Awsome catch Paul. I love frogfish. Which tank will he be going in to? Keep an eye out for isopods and don’t keep him with any other fish.

are they susceptible to isopods?
he’s gonna go in the 65. he can be put with fish larger than himself, can’t he?

Very susceptible to isopods because they are benthic creatures just like the isopods. Difficulty with larger fish is that they often will nip at the fish. The fish after all often immitates there natural food sources such as aglae or a small yummy dancing crustacian.(from there esca/lure) Won’t say it is impossible, but isn’t advicable. They are pretty much to be kept in species only tanks.

Also note please do not lift these guys into the air and they should never be netted. It’s body can colapse under it’s own weight if lifted in the air. They also can accidently swallow or gulp down air and be unable to release it.

i read that in the ocean if there’s danger they will jump on the floating raft of seaweed and stay there for a “very long time”. it seems to go against your warning about air being a problem???
from freshmarine:
The Sargassum Fish juveniles and adults usually live closely associated with floating algae. Adults are sometimes seen swimming under clumps of floating Sargassum weed. When threatened by a predator the Sargassum Anglerfish sometimes jumps out of the water onto the top of an algal mat. It may stay out of water for some time.

Sweet fish, love to have one if my trigger wouldn’t eat it!

Sweet fish Paul. I saw it and wished I had an extra tank for it. They really should be kept in species tanks. They will try and eat any fish almost as big as them. Your clowns may try to bully him. I would probably remove the clowns and just keep him. He is super cool and well worth the tank space.

What type of trigger do you have Joe? I don’t think I have ever seen you post pics of your tank.

Paul I was reading through this and several other pages.

Could be that the air swallowing thing is just something someone said and it has been repeated over and over again without any scientific documentation. Regardless it is discussed enough that I would take the precaution of leaving the fish in the water. If there was even the slightest risk of losing the fish due to it swallowing air I would leave it in the water and when I had one that is what I did. Even when I attempted to hold my angler with one hand and use a pair of pliers to pull at a parasitic isopod in the gill of my fish, I kept him under water the entire time. Even if they don’t gulp air there is the risk there body would collapse on itself. That’s my two cents.

that’s great info, jon. many thanks. as far as i can tell, this is a Histrio histrio. seems to be a good candidate for home tanks.

More pics? Video of it eating? This is one beautiful animal for sure. Real jealous. One of these days when time and money permits I want to keep some of these in a zoanthid only tank or better yet a mated pair. There was at least one individual working with breading frog fish a couple of years ago.

i’ll try for a video of it eating real soon. he’s a bit skittish but takes silverside chunks.

If the silver sides are a bit large try asking your LFS to order IQF sand eels and krill. Certain batches of silver sides can contain huge fish. My eel can take in just about everything, but you might try other options for you frogfish. Always good to mix up the diet anyways. Also a good idea to start soaking the foods in things like vita-chem, selcon, and others.

I have a clown in my 90. He has been there around six months. (?) I think.

<------That’s him in my avatar. He’s about four times the size he was when I got him.

I will try to put some pics up tonight.

Suppose that was him in your avatar? Now a snake, lol. I saw the other pics. He ever try to taste your fingers. It reminds me of a little one at an account I take care of for work that has bit me like 4-5 times. Active little fish.

Heheheh well, it was him. He is really cool, I feed frozen from tongs and he fights me for the cubes. Never tried to sample my hand though. That’s real cute until he’s 8" long and takes a finger.

I like your Hard Water Picnic Table Tank!

Paul how is the fish doing?

srry i forgor to update. i did more research and read differing opinions, but when i rerad that it can eat fish twice its size, i had to take it back to tfb. they sold it the next day. i really didn’t wanna do it, but common sensse won out over desire.
