Problem with temp.

I have a 30gal tank up and running for about 2 month and the water temp are terrible some time it when up to about 110 degree or more, but the temp when up only when the light on (t5 lighting and only used for about 2 week) I have the fan on top to keep it cool but seem not to be working. was there any way I can kept my temp to the normal level? I don’t want to end up buying a chiller because that cost too much and plus my tank only 30gal I don’t think is worth it. I have kill a lot of my coral and 3 fish already and I don’t want to lose anymore, you guy think because of the light should I get a difference lighting? anyone know how to solve this problem please lmk thank you.

110? are you sure?

if you use a heater, its probably way to large or malfuctioning. if not, what is the ambient temperature of your house? i would suggest to double check your thermometer, there is no way your really reaching temps that high unless your using your stove as a tank stand.

T5 typically isnt a large heat source, and a fan should be more than enough compensation. my guess is that your bad luck with the fish/corals has nothing to do with temp and your simply getting a bad reading from the thermometer. with T5 lighting and an average room temperature year round you should need nothing more than a heater for the winter time and maybe a fan in the summer if you dont run your AC a lot.

I take down the tank and move everything to the new tank until I solve the problem anyway thank for the help

I would suspect its a problem with your temp sensor, either type or location. 110 is waaaay high. Its either a bad heater or a bad sensor. Is the water hot to the touch? For reference 150 and you would yank your hand away instantly. 110 is would be VERY noticeably hot by touch.

Can you post a picture or two of the setup so that we can see what it is set up like… that might help with diagonosing the problem. Are you using a glass thermometer or a digital one? What size heater? Can you also post a picture of the fan setup?

I would like to help but I’m a very visual person and pictures always help me.

I also doubt 110 otherwise everything would be dead in the tank. If you heater wattage is too high you will have large fluctuations in temp. It also will shutoff at a higher temp. The heater or thermometer may also be broken.

i agree with the 110 temp. i met jim today at my home and he is a really nice guy. i went over some basics of keeping a succesful reef tank and one major problem i could tell is he said his salinity is 1.035 which is way to high. i offered to stop by and bring some testing equipment over and check out his setup and try and give some advice. if anyone else lives in the area or can get over there before me i’m sure he would appreciate it. i think he is like alot of newbies listens way to much to people in various fish store who try and pump equipment and chemicals. imo a 30g tank needs nothing but good lighting, consistent water changes , heater, filtration, weekly testing , and most of all patience.

That last part is very true. Hopefully you can figure out what the problem is with the tank. For the salinity, he may mean 35ppt or have gotten ppt and specific gravity confused when he was trying to regulate it. Pretty easy mistake to make if your just starting out.

Yeah, I agree, something is wrong in your temp readings. I make beef jerky, overnight in the oven at 110F. You can do crock pot cooking at that temp, slowly over 24 hours… get one of them simple thermometers and double check. Otherwise invite us all over for seafood chowder.
