Protein Skimmer

I’m thinking about purchasing an AquaC Remora skimmer for my 35 gal reef tank that I plan to start soon. I would be running it with a MaxiJet 1200 powerhead. Has anyone used this particular skimmer? It has received a lot of good reviews on-line, but I’d like to hear other opinions too. Thanks!

Jennifer

The word from the general knowledge bank is it’s a good skimmer. I assume its the hang on back skimmer model. the Maxijet drive is it’s base model. and works pretty good. their better mod is to replace the maxi jet 1200 with a mag 3 pump. the diference being the maxijet pumps 295 gph and the mag 3 pumps 350 gph. small difference, but many say it is a notable improvement in skimming. Same applies to the in sump model. It is more than adequate for a 35 gallon tank. You should be good. Some friends have run this skimmer and been very happy with it for even larger tanks.

Welcome to DRC!!

There are many many opinions about skimmers. Typically people buy a dirt cheap skimmer, hate it, spend the money on a “real skimmer” and love it and stick with that company for life. I would invest in a decent skimmer from the get and in my opinion this is a good one.

I have used the the in sump version of the Remora for years and love it. It was my first “real” skimmer.(anythng under $100 is not a “real” skimmer imho.) I think it would be great for that size tank with the 1200 maxi jet and the great thing is you can upgrade the pump later if you get a bigger tank. Putting a mag 3 in that small tank would just be an eye sour and be way over kill.

I agree 100% my first skimmer even though it cost $200 was the worst skimmer ever. I hated going down stairs and having to adjust the thing twice a day. I researched skimmers and then found a brand that I will stay with, ASM

You know what, that is the case sometimes. I too spent a good chunk of change on the first skimmer I purchased, but it was partial under LFS advice and not enough research. It was a skimmer/filter/UV sterilizer/carbon/foam… Practically did it all. Even did automatic water changes onto my desk and the floor of my parent’s second story home!

Good thing their are more and more quality LFS around. Things are changing. Slowly, but they are.

I have a Remora HOB hanging on the wall of my sump. It’s a 55 gallon mixed reef with a 20 gallon sump and it works great. Their customer service is great too. You should have no problem usiing it with your proposed setup.
