I recently sold my Hippo Tang as he was too big for my 75 after 2 years. When I got him he was about 1 1/2 inches when I sold him he was 6+ and very stocky (I’m not fat I’m big boned)
The naso will do ok in a 55 for a short while but will eventually become too large. The first sign they are getting too large is they will become territorial towards all the fish who stray too close. (chasing, nipping, making the other fish hide) The second sign will be missing fish. On the good side is I will probably have my 220 up and running next year so I will be in the market for one.
Most would say a tang should be kept in a 6 foot long tank 110 gallons or larger. Most 110 and larger are 6 foot by something. A standard 55 is 4 foot by 13 inches.
usually, im not that bad when it comes to tangs. i think several tangs can be kept in a 4’ tank. however, a naso is not one. like al mentioned, these guys dont stay small for long, and if it does stay small there is something wrong.
Anyways back to the original topic. I think a good point was brought up earlier… there is nothing saying that you NEED to run a protien skimmer. If you keep up with water changes and watch what you feed you can get away without one. For the amount that mine acually skims, I might as well not be using one. One option is to grow some cheato in the tank to use up nutrients. If you poke it through eggcrate and make a wall out of it it will not only give small critter a place to hide but it can also be used to disguise equipment in the tank, such as a heater or powerhead.
Here is a picture of Keleigh’s (my chaperone at the meeting :P) first tank, shortly after setting up. It was a normal 29 gallon that had a small HOB filter for water movement and a heater. In the bottom was a DSB of about 3" of fine well established sand, and it had about 30lbs of good quality rock in it. I hate to say it but it got one water change in six months. The only real maintnance that it took was cutting out the cheato as it grew. The intake for the pump as well as the heater were behind the wall of cheato, and the pump output was on the outside of the wall, causing flow through the tank. This tank is still set up and hasnt had any major problems. It gets a water change about every 6 months when I go up to visit her family with her and other than a little film algae on the glass once in a while it is doing great and stuff is growing like crazy.
is that a kenya or colt in the left corner? right now im not running any kind of skimmer on my 25gallon.
what kind of lights would you reccomend. im thinking t5’s. it would be mostly softies but i would like to do some harder stuff. what are some of the harder corals needs.
The right corner has a rock with some pulsing Xenia in it, im guessing thats what you meant.
Are you asking about lights for the 55g? It depends on what types of hard corals you want to keep. If what you like is mainly the LPS (large polyped stony) corals such as frogspawn, bubbles, candycanes ect then you have alot of options. If you are looking into the SPS (small polyped stony) then I would go with t5 or MH. Thats not saying that you cant keep the colored sticks under PC’s or VHO’s or anything else, you just have to be more careful about placement. We used a 4x65W PC fixture when we first set up our 75 and we actually had pretty good growth from our one SPS (a montipora), however we had our tank aquascaped so that we could put it 5 inches below the light. As long as you are careful with placement you can keep most corals in any tank. Really, its all personal preferance. If you mainly want to keep softies then I probably wouldnt go with MH, but that is personal preferance. I know one of our members grows SPS under T8 lights and does quite well with them if im not mistaken.
In my opinion, for a mixed reef t5’s are the way to go. You can keep softies, LPS, SPS, clams, anenmones, just about anything. Plus, you have the most options for different color bulbs, and you can make a DIY light hood fairly cheap. The most costly part of our DIY T5HO light hood on the 90g was the individual reflectors (21$ each).
Cp will work but I would do T5. More flexible as far as coral selection. If you expand in the future they will go to the new tank.
I would go with T5s. Right now they are close to the same price as the others and you can keep just about anything under them. Leave yourself flexibility. Every coral has specific needs, but in general the hard corals prefer a little higher flow and are more fussy about where your calcium levels sit. Most prefer brighter light as well. If you did a 4 bulb T5 fixture you could keep hard corals anywhere in the top half of the tank. If you did a two bulb fixture you would probably only be able to keep SPS healthy in the very top of the tank. Again these are general rules and there are plenty of exceptions.
