Ok, so I have been really really busy lately, and havent had much time to spend with my tank, but this morning as I was looking at it when the lights first came on, I noticed what looked like a hard red shell growing between my zoas… if i take my tweezers, it flakes away with a little bit of pressure… anyone know what this could be? I am going to try to get a picture of it, but no promises…
Thanks
Billy
Here is the best picture I could get… it almost looks like it is part of the zoa, like it may have died off and it is trying to separate or something…

it is closed up because i was moving it around and accidentally touch the heads, trying to get a good picture.
Hard to tell from the pic but I would say:
If it is soft - cyano bacteria a.k.a. red slime algae
If it is hard - coraline algae
ya i wouldnt say slime algae if it crumbles, but def looks like coraline… dunno, i dont think it would be bad, but wouldnt the zoas then grow on it… hmm maby not coraline
does it move??? the edges almost look like it may be some kind of worm/nudibranch…

Second that question.
It may be some odd type or growth form of coraline. Entoreefer had something similar growing in her tank.

It does not move. It is hard and when I use my tweezers it actually breaks off in chunks. I have removed as much of it as I can. I have had to do this one other time, but it wasn’t this bad. It doesn’t look to be injuring any of the zoa’s, other than the fact that when this frag of zoa’s was fully open, they were packed in very tightly and now this portion has a big open space on it. It does sort of look like a form of coralline. If I can get a big enough chunk to break off at some point, I will pull it out of the tank and take some better pictures of it. and the next time I decide to frag a piece of the zoa, while it is out of the tank, I will take some better pictures of it too.
are you coming to the 19th meeting, bring some with you…
I doubt i will be at the meeting. I work part time on my in-laws farm and this is harvest season, so I’m busy pretty much every day till pretty late at night.
i am trying to get a few frags started with 4 or 5 heads on each frag. Once they are healthy and starting to expand, i’ll be sure to bring some to a meeting.
I think i see a little bit of it too on one of my frags… i would say its coraline
It is probably shelving coraline.
i have some on my pinapple passion zoa… nbd they just started growing on it.

Some coraline grows into scroll looking forms. Very cool.
