For decades the reef aquarium trade has collected rock from the reefs of the world to use as a basis for our captive reefs. This practice has at times been done in very destructive ways using crowbars to dismantle the natural reefs. As island nations around he world have become aware of these illegal practices and the pillaging of their reefs most have banned the collection of rock. Today, the remaining rock collected from ravaged natural reefs is mostly shipped via boat and is rotten and very dead by the time it reaches the US.
This “boat” rock becomes a sponge of nasty nitrate and phosphate laden decayed material that slowly releases into your reef causing terrible algae blooms and killing valuable corals.
