Anyone who has one of these ever compare it to the regular plastic floaty kind of salinity meters are they that far apart where you would wana spend the extra $ on it?
yes they are much better i used it to set the floater because the floater is easier
Same here!
I love my refractometer… I used to use the swing arm even rinsed it out after every use it was pretty accurate but over time it seemed to lose its accuracy.
The refractometers are alot more accurate and more consistent.
i always used the deep 6 swing arm since the beginning I heard about refracto’s so i tried it, well come to find out i was maintaining 1.028 for a while so i marked where 1.026 was on the swing arm and use it. I check it every month or two against the refracto.
If you wanted I wouldn’t mind using my refractometer to calibrate your hydrometer. Then you could decide what you want to do. PM me if your interested.
let’s all calibrate together! mine is correct at 0 and at 1.026. thanksx tim

Yea I notice if you dont rinse them they start to stick and wouldnt doubt if it lost it accuracy seems to struggle to get it to go up past a certain point. Thanks for the info guys guess I’ll spring the xtra bucks for one.
Vinegar soak will clear it up
Just Some Guy,Good move by deciding to get the refractometer, in the long run it will save you more money than it cost.
IMO, if you have a refractometer, which is very EASY to use, why would you trust your readings by a cheapo swing arm to give you accurate readings. There is no doubt that a refractometer is the BEST way to get proper readings. PERIOD
I would also suggest you get a bottle of calibration fluid if it does not come with one, DPA has a bottle and it last forever.

+1
The refractometer is a better tool to use. I have to say thanx for my golden ticket prize. The swing arm is garbage, but you get what you pay for. The calibrated tool is more accurate. I used to test in three different spots in my 125 tank and take an average because it would never read the same. I did the same with my new refractometer and got the same reading each time. Put out the money and get the right tool for the job.

Congrats on your win! i’m curious how close your “average” readings were to the refractometer?
