How deep should i make the bed in my fuge, and what substrate should i use?
Getting ready to mill the slots in my divider so need advice quick.
Will be milling the slots just above the bed on the inlet side to the fuge…
Don’t think there is a specific depth I have about a inch of mud in mine but it has been anywhere from 3 inches to a bare bottom.
I have a bare bottom fuge, and one with a couple inches of mixed substrate. both grow macro and have pods. I prefer a little substrate over the bb one, it seems like it keeps itself cleaner.
For some reason I thought that the fuge was supposed to have a deep bed, what about this miricle mud stuff any good?

Alot of people claim it is a waste of money and you might be better seeding good sand with some from established tanks. I used the miracle mud in my fuge but I dont think it was any different then any good quality sand.
I have an ecosystem sump, which holds 40#'s of MM, I’ve recently started a bio-pellet reactor and will be removing the MM(it’s time to change it out anyway since it’s over a year old). Having done this I’ll be bb in the sump. I have a DSB ( 6+In. )in the DT and don’t think that taking the MM of line is going to have a big impact.

mud and dsb’s serve two diff purposes… MM is designed to “feed” nutrients/ minerals to the fuge

I agree, but mine is about 1 1/2 years old and if you follow the recommendations I should have replaced by now. I’m not sure it still has any value to it at this point, and don’t think that removing it will change anything. I can always reinstall it at a later date.
I’ve never used it, and i’m not disagreeing with you removing yours. I think one of our members uses it with good results, and i think he changes out half of it every 6 months.
I just wanted to elaborate on this question
