I recently incorporated a refugium in my system which is stocked with live rock rubble, macro, and culpera and I’ve noticed that the water at the top of the center section looks rather scummy. From what I’ve read, the flow through a refugium should be rather low, but I’m wondering how I can avoid surface scum. Has anyone else had this problem? I assume its not particularly healthy and I’m wondering whether I should add a power head or koralia 1 to keep the surface stirred.
You should have enough turbulence to keep the surface agitated. if not use a PH to do so. I personally make the baffle going from the 1st section to the middle higher then the baffles going from the middle to the third section to create a water fall effect to keep the surface agitated.
I just revamped my 20 gal. fuge a few days ago with new baffles, and i def. shouldve made the first baffle about an inch taller than it is. Maybe i can silicone another strip up there…my first chamber, which has my skimmer in it, gets bubbles built up in the top.
