still reading it sounds like a great idea since a containor of Three Little Fishes cost 20$.
or a bucket cost 100
Anyone else with thoughts on this…
Anyone wanna try it out?
If it were to ever become common place I might consider it, but consider the cost of the materials used to clean it, the time to get those materials, the time to make sure you were doing things right, one more thing to wonder/worry about, the savings is not substantial in my mind. In a well balanced tank that is not over fed and gets 0tds RODI the phosphates are not high enough to warrant that much media being replaced that often. If phosphates are a continuous problem then the source needs to be addressed.
Bottom line I think my time is better spent elsewhere with my tanks.
I guess this was the main thread. farther down that thread goes to this patent site on regenerating GFO with potasium hydroxide to harvest the phosphate for fertelizer and reuse the GFO.

but im too tired to read through the whole things. somebody please sumarize the chemistry?
Bottom line is bad idea got it…
Might not be a bad idea, but isn’t really worth the time and is really complicated. When you way the time and cost of materials it isn’t really worth it, throw any hint of risk and forget it.
When I get some time, I’ll give it a shot and give you guys some feed, back I can get a hold of those chemicals and have other uses for them.
PS thanks for sharing bz, interesting!
Cool, keep us updated…
