Replacing return pump. Suggestions?

I have a 65g reef tank with a 20g sump. I have an older aging Eheim pump for my return. Intermittently I hear odd noises from it and I figured it was so outdated a newer pump would be economical regarding power consumption.

Suggestion so far was a MAG500, would this be sufficient?

As always, thanks for the assist,
Josh

Return pump depends on what your over flow can handle. With a mag 5 your gonna get little over 300 gallons a hour return. Ive been using quiet one return pumps and they work very well.

It’s a 65g RR, is there a quick easy calculator to figure out the volume it may handle?
This is one of my top projects since I bought the pump/sump/etc. all used.

Thanks Billrob! Maybe we’ll cross paths up at Saltcreeps, I heard I missed you by 15min!

Again appreciate the input,
Josh

A couple of notes/questions. Is your sump drilled or drillable? And is there room for an external pump. Setting up an external pump isn’t anywhere near as easy, but they are often quieter, use less electricity, and add less heat to the water(which may or may not be a good thing.)

One thing I would certainly consider doing, unless your tank is in the center of the room, is running the line from the return pump behind the tank and over the top. If your tank was made “reef ready” and has two holes in it both could be used for drains. A single drain with 400gph draining from it is 8 times as noisy as a two drains each doing 200gph. (“8 times” being a guess I don’t own an instrument that measures sound, but have hooked up over 100 tanks and have a bit of experience with noisy reducing)

BTW if you have heat issues because of lighting or whatever else, do NOT switch to a mag pump. I love how rock solid, long, lasting, easy to clean mag pumps are, but their electrical usage is typically a bit higher then other pumps and the amount of heat they put off is very significant.
