Sad news. Beautiful Dog needs new home.

Hey everyone,

So i have some terrible news. I travel a lot for work, but usually only in one or two week periods, but still up to 40% of the year. For the past few years i’ve been involved in a serious relationship, which lead us to invest in a dog back in May, a beautiful alaskan malamute named Sarah. Unfortunately, that relationship has just recently ended and now because of this, I can no longer care for the dog. I am originally from Mass, which is where all my friends and family live, so I am not in a situation where I can easily find someone to care for her while I’m away. I haven’t lived in the area long enough to establish any relationships strong enough to work a better situation out. As much as I absolutely adore this dog, I’ve decided the best decision is probably to adopt her out, as she has been through a lot of changes in the past year and I’ve decided she needs some stability. Here are the facts:

She’s 7 years old, will be 8 december 16th. That being said, she’s active when you want her to be (walks/runs) and calm when you don’t (after work when you just wanna kick your feet up, she will too). She’s great with children of all ages. (I have 10 month and one year old nephews and three nieces between the ages of 4 and 7 and she’s played well with all of them on several occasions. I have a rabbit (also looking for a new home) that she is very very calm around. She’ll just watch the rabbit run around the house. Occasionally they’ll walk right up to each other and sniff, then lose interest in each other. She’s great with other dogs and pretty much ignores cats completely. Overall, she’s a fantastic dog.

Now for the downside. She does have a history of anxiety of being left alone, stemming from the fact that she was adopted. She’s gotten over it as much as i can see, but she can not be left around anything edible or even concievably edible, because if she can smell it, she’ll find a way to get to it. her favorite being the trash, but she’s also developed a taste for fish food. But on a list of terrible flaws a dog can have, that is not exactly high up there. But for this reason, i would like to see her go to a home with a fenced in yard, just so this issue can be easily resolved and there doesnt have to be any worry of her having the anxiety based accidents in the house she used to have when i first adopted her. If anyone is interested or would even consider fostering her while I’m gone (I work as an engineer on navy vessels and so that time can be up to a month, rarely but it does happen), I would be greatly appreciative. please feel free to pm me with any questions.

here are some pics of the beautiful little lady:

Sorry to hear. That is a beautiful dog for sure. Our dog would just hump her all day LOL… Wish you the best of luck finding her a good home. We would give it chance but my fiance has to many furry animals and not enough scaled animals.

How long can you typically leave a dog like this alone without being let outside to use the bathroom?

I wish we had a fenced in yard. We also are out often and already have a cat that can’t be left alone for long. :frowning:

Best of luck finding her a good home.

How long she can be left alone depends on how you leave her. If you leave her to roam the house, anything longer than half an hour and she’ll manage to find something to occupy her. and whatever she finds, you will most likely not appreciate. However, as bad as this sounds, I tie her up right inside the house so she can only move about three feet in all directions and she’ll be fine all day long, 8+ hours. I use a webcam to watch her from work and she sleeps literally the entire time. I’ve been told by the vet its a comfort factor. If she’s left alone to protect the entire house, she gets anxious because she doesn’t feel capable of it. But if she’s tied up, she knows nothing is expected of her and she just relaxes the entire time. That’s why I say its best to have a fenced in yard where she can be left to roam and relax.

This all being said, I’m still trying to work out a way that I can just have her fostered while I’m away because I love her and there’s nothing I hate more than the idea of giving her up.

I really wish I could help, I grew up having dogs but with my current work schedule and vacations it is near impossible. I have cats but they are so easy compared to dogs. Its a great looking dog, I dont think It would work with my smaller yard and not having a dedicated space to keep him in.
