Is salt creep reusable? and I’m not talking about john either
LOL
John is used and abused ::
As far as the salt itself I always throw mine back in the sump. Theres not usually that much.

same as Bill… i get just a little, and knock it into the sump…

I’ve heard people whine about it collecting particles from the air and then you put them in your tank… “Really? And the tank is typically vacuum sealed so nothing floating in the room can contaminate it?”
I have kept many beautiful tanks in the past and thriving propagation systems and always just knocked it back in.
Just a note on this… Make sure you’re knocking it back in to the sump or an area of your tank where it can’t land on corals.
Thanks, that’s what I figured but I wasn’t sure if there was some sorta wise tale thatsclaims if you use salt creep that it causes spontanious combustion or somthing like that.

well, jason, it’s really a “WIVES’ TALE”. and it depends on where you put it if it will combust
:-)lol
That term hasn’t been used since the 1800’s when communication was still very poor, but Paul will correct you properly, lots of first hand experience. >LOL<
Naw, crusty old salt creep wont spontaneouly combust. For that you need a pile of cotton rags soaked in linseed oil, or a spoonfull of KMnO4 and a squirt of glycerine. thats how i used to light our boy scout camp fires when i was a kid.
But when salt water dries up, I think the high PH and concentration as it dries makes some insoluable carbonates , so it wont be the same when you drop it back in. True? False?
Salt deposits left due to the spatter of tank water are solid due to the evaporation of water from the tank water because of partial pressures (pp of water in air is less than in the tank water, causing evaporation at room temperature until saturation is reached . . . which won’t happen unless it actually rains in your house, which would be pretty cool to see).
I do not see how this would physically change the way the ions react and form water-insoluable salts. The activation energy for evaporation is taken from thermodynamic devices, and not via catalyst. As with mixing salt with RODI water, the pH will fluxuate and may hurt the corals in the tank (as stated by Craig), but if it’s mixed in the sump in small quantities I don’t think it’ll make a significant difference to the chemical activity of the much larger volume of affected tank water.
If I’m not mistaken, some companies that package the very salt we use harvest salt water off reef locations, and evaporate off the water, and sell the salt. I see no difference, in principle, how salt creep and packaged salt differ (aside from smaller amount of beneficial trace chemicals due to organism consumption).
So, Ken, I’m going to go out on a limb and say no, salt creep will not produce insoluble salts when dissolved. Stipulation: If the salt creep doesn’t already contain insoluble salts that have precipitated out of solution.

Let me write this down…
We haven’t accumulated enough saltcreep to really worry about it, but it’s good to know that we can just knock it into the sump. I <3 recycling!!
Attention attention we now have another nickname for a fellow member. It is…
Dr. Professor Johnson m.d. Ppd opp. Lol. ??? Ha ha
and dr johnson actually wrote a long post with no english mistakes in it. I have my faith in humanity restored. first time in drc history.
And that’s why he a doctor.
Meep Meep Meep.
