I’m looking to set up a sea horse tank in the future and then maybe someday start breading them. I’m Wondering if anyone have one setup and what is the difficulties of keeping them.
there is a guy that goes in too the fishbowl that raises seahorses. ask fishguy for more info.
First of welcome to the forum!
First of what do you know about keeping a marine aquarium? If you have kept clown fish before for 6 months or so and understand how to do water changes and take care of a SW aquarium you are part of the way there. Keep in mind one slight difference. Clownfish will leave many years being fed once every other day. Seahorses should be fed more then 5 times a day and if you are not lucky enough to get a captive raised one trained on frozen food… then you may need to feed live foods 5 times a day. Now keep in mind how often you had to change water on the clown fish tank and how easy that was and multiply the amount of work by well… 12.
It’s just water changes, not too difficult and if you work from home and are in front of the tank all the time then it is no biggy. Don’t let me scare you away from it completely, and if you are serious I have some really good resources around here somewhere I can dig up. I would not recommend seahorses as a first SW fish though. It is good you are asking questions now and starting to do your research.
Once again welcome.
Glen is there really? It actually isn’t difficult to catch seahorses locally and most LFS wouldn’t know the difference. We should know it’s possibly illegal and likely a species that shouldn’t be kept with out a chiller. I would like to get the info for this person if it is real deal. Unfortunately there are many people that collect things out of the Delaware bay and sell them to local fish stores.
Welcome to the site reefman66
Jon , the local guy breeds I believe black sea horses.
There is some good info here about keeping sea horses.
Jon, do you remember if this the same group of Ladies that where at MACNA with all the sea horses?
They really knew what they were talking about.
Thank you for the info. I’ve been in the hobby for over 25 years now and been doing reef for the past 15 years or so. I’ve done variety of reef keeping just never specifically sea horse. I’m just looking for a different challenge. I’ll get with the folks at the fishbowl and try to find the person with the sea horse knowledge.
I talked to them for a good 30 min, i was so fascinated about what they had to say… made me want a seahorse tank, but then i remeber i have no income and i am still in HS lol… go for it … keep us updated… and welcome… will you be going to the meeting…?

don’t know yet…I will try.
Did Bellamy (icy) have a Seahorse tank?
We never actually put seahorses in our tank. Intended to but got clowns instead. Thinking of setting one up now with the dwarf seahorses and pipefish we catch at the beach.
