Enjoy

Doe’s anyone have any experience with the “jelliquarium” or keeping jellyfish in general?

I had a Cassiopeia Jellyfish for a month or so… and then it died. This type can make it’s own food through photosynthesis and eats meaty foods in the water column.

Cool any pics?

i’ve seen topics on RC about keeping them try searching that site…there’s a company out in california which sells the live jellies as well as circular tanks for their housing…only thing is they don’t live very long similar to cephelapods

They don’t even fair for very long in commercial aquariums, from what I hear. Matter of weeks to a few months,

My lucky day. just cruising old articles from ADVANCED AQUARIST magazine and found this one for you.

They can be kept in what is called a KREISEL tank. built something like a clothes dryer. but the drum stands still and the water rotates by slots blowing water back in tangentially. They are expensive. but hey, that might be good for business!

for that client who really wants something different.

a fair amount of info out there. but only a couple species that are available in the trade. and some types are very deadly.

Jellies dont live long. perhaps a year, but on the other hand …

How about a nice CUTTLEFISH tank instead?
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/9/aafeature

cuttles and squids live about 18 months.

I’d love to do a cuttlefish tank, played with them in Mexico once, very interesting and intelligent creatures.

yeah i got to play with a pair of cuttles in the keys one year, off the stern of the boat at dock . they were mating and just kept flashing colors. They will spawn and lay eggs in captivity. so a pair can be an on going endeavor. after the eggs are layed and hatch they die. but then you got hundreds.

We were in LFS and saw a tank with jellies in it. Very small, about the size of a quarter. I assumed they were jellies. They were upside down on the bottom of the tank, not moving much. Tenticles were up and flowing. I figured they were feeding. They are amazing creatures to say the least. I was suprised to see them in LFS. The links posted about both jellies and cuttlefish were very informative.
I have never played with cuttlefish but we did swim with and feed the stingrays in the Caribbean, just off the Cayman Islands. That was very fun, also was about a week before croc. hunter was killed by one. And we thought we were safe…what did we know!

It’s a small world of accidents waiting to happen out there. have to keep our witts about us when dealing with wild critters.

Stingray City! That is a blast, we did it and stole the food from the dive master and all the stingrays “attacked” us (not really) it was awesome. They try to suck your fingers off when you feed them

Yes! Exactly where we went! Great time! What an experience! Wish we could go back soon!

Cassiopeia Jellyfish …

Yes, that sure looks like them.

That’s the type I had. I got it from ECA back in October.

Cool, so you had one? How long were you able to keep it? Was it hard to keep?

I kept it for a month or two. I don’t know how hard they are to keep. They don’t fare that well in most reef tanks. They also get caught in powerheads very easily.
