Seahorse Tank

So I have decided what I am going to do with my new cube! I am thinking of setting up a seahorse tank. Anyone done this before? I saw one while I was in Atlantis in the Bahamas and it was just beautiful, and about the size of my tank so it should make a nice one. :think)

Your home enough to feed them live foods 3-4 times a day and then do the water changes required to remove all that food? Check out http://seahorse.org/ & http://seahorsesource.com/… there was another as well, but forget it.

live aquaria has a seahorse for $1,000. not counting shipping. a bargain

Jon any recommendations on how to best care for a sea horse tank?

Let’s remember the OP is brand new to the hobby and could use some motivation and encouragement as opposed to demotivation.

Hey Paul, I saw those. Look nice and different, but not really $1000 nice. I plan on picking up some reds or yellows at some point.

Craig I’ve got plenty of information, just saying most people hear you need to feed them many times a day and have heard enough to move on to another idea.

If you can plum in the nano tank to a larger system it may make it easier. However according to the “experts” on raising sea horses they should be kept a cooler temperatures than most reef tanks to prevent disease. Some species are subtropical or cold water species and they certainly have to be kept at low temps for long term success.

The word aquaculture and “tank raised” is stretched and debated with sea horses. Some of them are raised in pens out in the wild and some say these do poorly in captivity. If you can find some raised in America you’ll likely have much better success because the animals have been used to captivity for generations, often come from disease free environments, and would go through a LOT less stress from their current home to yours.

I would NOT say it’s extremely difficult to keep sea horses, but it certainly isn’t easy for the average active person. If you are new to the hobby I really wouldn’t recommend them.

Something else you may look into for a nano is a pistol shrimp goby pair. Just type “pistol shrimp goby pair” into YouTube. I haven’t seen any recently in any LFS or on any of the club sponsor sites, but most can bring in something if you ask or you could check out liveaquaria.com.

Another real neat nano tank would be one filled with maxi mini carpet anemones. There was a pretty good article in a recent issue of coral magazine.(they are selling back issues of this publication now)

Craig are you calling me an OP? :-)lol
Oh, did I say seahorses, I meant saving for daughter’s college verdict_in

Seriously though, I do research everything I am going to put into my tank extensively and have had to take the occasional “impulse buy” my husband tries to surprise me with back to the fish store because it simply won’t jive with the environment in my little community. I am a stay at home mom so yes I do have time to feed the fish or whatever livestock I have whenever need be. I certainly have enough animals, (horses, dog, cats, fish) that they basically run my life. Quite aware of responsibility of animal husbandry… ::thumbsup::

I found this site.

Haha! You’re funny Craig!

a seahorse tank is feasible,i have run one for over a year, some thinking and planning is reguired, i have a 28 gallon nano with 20 lbs of rock( started with dry rock , no problem) let it cyle and start growing copepods. I let my tank sit for 3 months after cyling to grow pods. Then, look for sales. I found mine at permium aquatics in delaware (of course) at a resonable cost. I have 3 ( 1 male , 2 female) and a secretive wrasse as a tankmate. I have found that good quality food is a must. i use pe mysis, rinsed, with a turkey bastler, to feed my herd.Research the requirements for the seahorses you want, alot of horses need vertical height more than tank width to prosper.
