Skimmer Question Too

I didnt want to steal tat’s thread so I started another one.

I was trying to work it out myself but I was wondering if anyone could help me with the collection of my ASM G2 skimmer. The darn thing never came with a owner manual. The problems i am having are as follows.

  1. The gate valve mod.

I tried to do what I read online and no such luck. It really never collected anything. I also tried another configuration and no help. The following pictures show the setup.

  1. Collecting in the cup

I can only seam to get as much as the following picture. I read that the bubbles should be only hit about 3/4 of the cup. I dont know if this is true.

The gate valve mod appears to be done correctly, it’s a little different then mine but looks to be how ASM says to do it.

What is the bio-load like in your tank? How many fish, what kind, size etc.?

It could just be with a low bioload there’s not much in the tank to skim. Have you tried shortening the output tube to keep it abpve the water line to reduce back pressure in the skimmer?

Just three fish. Two Clowns and a Swallowtail Angel. One brittle star.

That is it. But wouldnt it fill up overtime. What I mean is that the little bioload will make it collect less but it still reach the top after a longer duration.

So you are saying do it kind of like yours (from the pictures on your build). That might work. If I just use two elbows. Is that correct?

Not necessarily saying mine is the best way to do it, but it may be an option worth testing - considering it’s about $1.49 for all parts necessary to do it.

I really think it’s a bioload issue. With only 3 fish in a 92 (or even a 55) there’s probably not a lot of protein to pull out, the skimmate may even be evaporating almost as fast as it’s being made.

Have you tried skimming wetter to see if you can get more skimmate but at a lighter density?

That is true. The bubbles should hover around the 3/4 mark and that's what seems to be happening. But I do see one problem.

See all the crud at the top of the inside pipe? That will stop the skimmer from working properly on a lighter bio-load. You need to clean that crud out. I clean mine every couple of days. If you skim a little wetter it would not build up as much. I skim pretty dry.

Ok it must be the lighter bioload. I am going to try to get by home depot and see if that or some other variation works.

Al I think I just will have to clean it every couple of days until my load gets bigger.
