skimmer

what are some good skimmers. im looking for around 300$, lol. i know some people like asm and i think ellen had an octopus.

im pretty soure someone had a mini g asm for like 50$ should i go with that? its olny good for 75 though.

let me know your thoughts, brett

i plan on having something like 60+% sps. i plan on haveing a moderate fish load.

my mini g does my 65 very well, lotsa skimmate, clean the cup 1 time a week , but i only have 7 smallish fish.

I use an ASM G3 on my 75g. I would go as big as possible if you’re going predominately SPS.

99% of the industry claims thier equipment is good for larger tanks then they really are. They are just speaking well of their own product. If it is raited for up to a 75 then I would say it probalby wouldn’t work well. That being said ASMs are really good skimmer, I’ve worked on MANY different aquariums with many different skimmers and the ASMs are some of the best.

I use an Aqua C Urchin at home and really like it.

I really liked my Asm G4
I talked Craig into the ASM G3

I have an ASM G4 and it is really loud from the air tube. Is there anyway to reduce that noise

Rich

Never heard the air just the water tumble.
If you could increase the size of the tube drawing air and reduce it at the pump that should quiet the sound a bit

I honestly would have to be sitting in front of the skimmer to see if I could find a way to make it stop making noise. Not sure of anything specific to say with out sitting in front of it.

Though… you could tackle several things at once with two moves.(haven’t done this myself, but know it has been done) First if you do some searching around some people have sound proofed their stands. I am not sure of the specific materials used, but I’ll look around see if I can figure it out. The negative side effect to this may be depleting the amount of gas exchange which occurs in your stand which can affect your water chemistry.
Secondly extend the air line tube to your skimmer… a lot. Run the air line hose if you can to the outside or your house. This would bring in fresh air to the aquarium and any noise that may come from air being sucked in would occur outside of your house.

This is what is often done in professionally installed aquariums such as those in casinos, clubs, and bars. Often times in these environments during peak hours the oxygen level in the room changes dramatically and it can severally impact the aquarium. Often times extending the air line outside is done in houses which are kept closed up(perhaps for allergy reasons) or in basements that simply have no way to breath through windows.

Sorry Bret for further taking the topic off course.

that idea scares me just for the fact i live in an apt and its hard to tell when there gona spray crap out side.

The sound from the tube is almost like a woopy cushion. I will try to make the end bigger and the tube longer.

Thanks guys

BTW- I do us sound proofing on the inside of the tank. It has adhesive and made for marine stuff so it can take the salt. VERY expensive- i got a piece from a friend and just did the doors of the stand. It makes a big difference.

Sorry for the highjack-

u can make a silencer from a medicine bottle and a few 1/4 fittings. have u seen the things that the new skimmer air lines hook up to? its called a silencer.

brett u seen my skimmer on my 75. its a reef octopus and it does well. ill sell it to u madd cheap. im upgrading and i want a cone. i would go with a msx 160 for a 75 if i was on a budget.
