small anemone

soo i was looking in my tank today and there is something growing on the glass about the size of a ball point pen tip its tiny looks like an anemone to me when i went to touch it it curled up into a ball its teeny teeny tiny and it seems to be a clearish whatish color not sure what it is was wondering if any1 could tell me! sorry cant get a pic because i dont have a good camera(only phone cam) and its on the front so u couldnt see much but its base

You need to look up Aiptasia. This is a pest and MUST be removed ASAP or it will take over your tank.

Peppermint Shrimp to the rescue!! I had this same problem with my tank when i started. I got some aptasia killer and killed the big ones but the little one kept comin back. I looked for anything that eats the things and Peppermint Shrimp did the job. The aptasia never came back… but the shrimp had nothing else to eat then they turned on my snails…

make sure you either hit it with something that is going to kill it in one shot or suck it out… if it breaks it will turn up everywhere

First - Don’t kill anything until you know what it is. There is always someone looking for something weird in this hobby. Scrape it off the glass and put in a separate tank until your sure you know what it is.

Second - Be careful adding livestock for the sole purpose of eliminating a problem. Peppermint shrimp are hit and miss with aptasia, depends on the size of the anemone and the particular shrimp.

Third - If it is aptasia, the glass is the best place for it to be. Use a razor blade and scrape it off the glass, net it out and dispose of properly (you get ti define properly here).

well it moved from the front of the glass to the back idk if its aptasia because it seems to have more arms thnigs that what seen pictures of aptasia having and there short the pics ive seen aptasia has been longer arms.

Remember that everything grows from buds. The arms may not be long yet due to the age of the animal.

Watch it over the next few days, see what it does. The meeting is coming uip next week, if we can’t determ ine exactly what it is by then put it in a baggie and bring it along, we’ll figure it out while we’re there.

I doubt it. Most corals and anemones will show some form of shock and it will be nearly impossible to determine what it is. Anemones will shrivel up into a ball so if it is small now it will be smaller then.

So Aptasia can move? verdict_in I knew they were a type of nem but mine never did…

well if it is aptasia in my tank than it made a whole jump from the front of the tank to the back of the tank… and over about a foot or soo… it could possibly aptasia because i did pull a piece out from the sand but it seemed to me to be alot different it had longer arms and it was like a rusty type of color… this one has more arms and there short it almost looks like a clearish white zoanthid polp except an anemone? lol u know what i mean? they have alot of short frilly arms as comparted to the long arms that ive seen aptasia having

It could be several different types of anemone. Just about anything can move in your tank, anemones will just release their foot and float around the tank until they land. They sset the foot for a litle while to deterine if they like where they ended up, if not they’ll let go and continue the journey.

I would try to isolate it in case it is a pest that you do not want floating around dropping pest seedlings all over the tank, once it grows out some more it will be easier to identify.

Even balled up, the size, shape, and color of the ball can speak volumes about what’s inside.

My best guess…

Look close?

Looks like a clear version of the old toy “Wacky Wall walkers”

So that is how it got to the other side of the tank

nah it doesntreally look like that its hard to explain cant even find it now it left from the back of the glass i have time tommorow i will try to look for it an possibly put it in a container at the bottom of the tank if i do find it…

okay so i found a second this 1 is on the front other is on the back almmost at the top this 1 looks different though this 1 is clear one in back had like a brownish tint to it also 1 in back seems to have shorter tenicals

Looks like a blurry aiptasia. I would kill it with a little kalk paste, or joe’s juice. Unless you like aiptasia, in which case, feed it once a week and you will have one quintillion of them by march.

Don’t try to remove it though, it almost guarantees pedal laceration reproduction.

*Note- me trying to sound smart

Definately an Aiptasia. If you decide to remove it, make sure you turn them PH off so it doesn’t get wash away by the current.
