ok, i know problems are way easier solved by pics. unfortunately, i have none. i didn’t even see it. but here goes. my sister has a pretty big anemone, exact species unknown. pink and flat base with 1" or so green tipped tentacles. 2 breeding occ. clowns in it. was in a 30 gal reef for over a year or so. beautiful animal. she moved it, and the clowns, into her 125. am-0 nitrite-0 nitrate-5ppm temp 80, 1.024 salinity. she has 4- 96w pc’s on it. 2- 10k’s, 2-actinics. skimmer, 2 mj’s, sump filter. anyhow, 2 days after the transfer, the anemone looked like it was on fire!!! not closed up and eliminating, just “smoking” out of the mouth… any idea at all? i have searched everything i could think of, and found nothing!!
ok so you are seeing a white? black? discharge coming from mouth. is there any guts or other discharge? sometimes when stressed certain things wil puck up thier guts if all perameters are the same in both tanks i would just give it time to settle in. it may be the change in lights. in other tank what lights were you running?
+1 My best guess as well
Also…
May be expelling waste
Stress and expelling food
Major change in light expelling zooxanthellae. *
*The zooxanthellae are photosynthetic organisms whose waste products are used by the anemone for food. With a major change in light the anemone requires different zaaxanthellae.
Check this link out. It’s a video of an RBTA spawning.
I wouldn’t think after moving the nem it would, but ya never know.
They “spawn” or clone themselves when under severe stress and when extremely happy. The split when under severe stress is a survival mechanism to ensure it will survive (Well at least one)
After sex or drinking I occasionally smoke
I know what she saw, I almost freaked the first time I saw it as well.
It was pooping. It looks bad, but since they only have 1 oriface they expell from the same hole they eat. Which makes it EXTREMELY gross :~S but nothing to be concerned about.
Depending on the color it was probably one of 3 things:
White:
Spawning
Brownish:
Expelling excess zooxanthelle
Pooping
We saw one of our anemones spawn before, but it was shortly after it got chewed in 1/2 by a powerhead. The anemone ended up making it, but most of the time spawning occours because of a stressful event.
def. spawning. the video looked exactly like it.
thanks a million for the responses
