Snails

Hello All, My girlfriend is taking care of my take over the summer as I am home for the summer. Two part question I have:

  1. my snails are dieing off… and there seems to be a common ending to each death… (my biggest one just died so i’m a bit annoyed). The common endings are bristleworms… man im pissed… this guy was like… the size of at least a 50 cent piece and his shell was almost the size of a baseball… (he was a pain in the butt before i got apoxy for my frags and such… but after that he was great… and had sooo much coraline and all)… but anyway hes dead… he was a large turbo… and ive lost 3 astreas as well. Could it be the worms? ((She checked all the levels and everything is fine so I don’t know what else could have done it… and temp is fine))

  2. Are there any snail diseases that are out there lol… I know that this is probably a no, but I just wanna know why my special little (but not so little) snail just died along w/ 3 other astreas…

Thanks guys, and I know this is not the best post but I’m a bit annoyed!

Apparently there were also 2 other turbo’s that have croaked… so any advise would be great!

When it comes to this hobby i have learned to never so never but it is very unlikely that the worms killed your snails. What is way more likely is that they worms started to consume the snails after they died. Snails, like most inverts, are super sensitive to water parameters.

How long have you had the snails? Sometimes if you dont take great care in acclimating inverts they will live for several days and seem fine but die because from the stress of acclimation.

Just as King Noob II aka logans_daddy said, the bristle worms are cleaning up the waste of dead animals and the odds that the worms actually killed a healthy snails are extremely thin.

absolutely! also possible that they had consumed their food and starved

could there maybe be temperature swings? I know Ive had to watch my tank the last couple days because it has been super humid outside with all the rain…

what about your GF topping off the tank with fresh water? is it RO? is she watching the SG? i know swings in that area can also hurt inverts…

how are your hermits doing if you have any? could they be killing the snails?

just a couple of my ideas…let us know how it pans out…

I would guess one of those two situations, with the exception that the snails can appear fine for a good bit longer than a few days.

When I first started in the hobby I had a few turbos die just like you and I hadn’t really taken too much care in their acclimation and a few weeks-months down the road they were kicking it. I now acclimate them very slowly and as ‘nicely’ as I can and they seem to do much better with the exception of the ‘ninja star’ snails, they seem to have more problems than others.

Make sure you catch those dead big snails quick and get them out…man do they stink!

I’m not quiet sure what is wrong. I agree that it isn’t probably the worms, I was just annoyed last night lol. My topoff water is RO, and i leave it circulating before it goes in the tank and it is exactly same temp and all. The temperatures have been very stable and I have had these snails for over 6 months. When I get snails I drip them, and they usually either do well for a long time, or die w/in the first day. From my experience though, if they live through the acclimation they do well… I was just very annoyed b/c I make sure everything is done well, and keep the parameters of the tank as stable as I can from 50 miles away lol, and I know my girlfriend does a great job as well with it. I just don’t know what else could have gone wrong. Thank you so far for the input guys! OO and the water quality has to be good b/c I have anemones, and shrimp that I think would go before the snails and they are all doing quite well. Any other possible ideas? Thanks again!

OO and my hermits have killed baby nesarius (i know thats mis-spelled) but they are very tiny, and the snails that are dieing have been around for a while and are much larger then the little guys. So I still don’t know what could be doing it. Ill keep you all updated though, and once again thank you!!
