Ordered a few new fish from Liveaquaria.com and got them yesterday. Three Lyretail anthias, 1 male and 2 females. Also, a mated pair of harlequin shrimps. Took a pic of the male anthias, but so far the females are shy.
SWEET!!!
I call dibs on any offspring!!!
love the lyretail. they will be one of the first new fish in my 265g. im going to get a large harem of around 8-10 of them hopefully sometime after holidays.
great pics!!
my mom keeps pushing me to get 1(or 3) for the 90, but i thought they didnt get along to well with wrasses.
very nice fish! how are they eating for you? hope the others come out so we can see them too.
Thanks, I was very satisfied with my order, all animals are very healthy and not very stressed. They ship in half blacked out plastic bags. And shipping was only $35.
I currently have 2 wrasses in the tank, I will let you know how they get along. Just got them yesterday, and they didn’t come out of rocks to eat. Will see what happens today.
The females are really nicely colored also, kinda yellowy orange.
Brett - anthias very considerably from species to species especially in regards to size and temperment. the lyretail are a little more aggressive and larger than other species and are probably not ideally suited for smaller tanks. ignitus and dispar are two popular choices that are peaceful and stay a little smaller although they arent quite as hardy as the lyretail from what i read. the dispar especially seems to require a little more care.
I really wasn’t into Anthias until I saw David Saxby’s reef. They are simply gorgeous fish in schools and they add a wonderful color to the tank that is really lacking without them.
Thanks for the info on the different types Logan’s Daddy. I’m not looking to start a new project just yet, but when I do build my next big reef (and I mean big) I’m going to have a full school of them.
Check out this video at 4 mins 35 seconds. I assume there are several different species of Anthias in there?
Nice John!!
So are you taking up stock in star fish feet ;D
dispar anthias are very nice fish but they are VERY finicky. I bought 4 and then 2 died within for no apparent reason. they ate but seemed to just wither away. i have 2 that are doing great, but i wouldnt buy em again. john, harlequin shrimp are very nice. i kepta single shrimp alive for over a year without killing a single starfish. i had 5 nomral sand sifters, that i harvested legs from every week. 1 leg, 1 week. tey would grow back.
please be responsible with ur starfish.
I did some reading about these tiny little non-harmful star fish, that I happen to have an explosion of in my tank . It said that harlequin shrimp will eat the little star fish. I hope so. We will see.
At feeding time tonight the anthias male and the smaller of the two females were out and feasting on mysis shrimp.
Really nice fish John. If I ever get a chance to set up my dream tank I will have a school of anthias.
R.I.P. asternia stars lOl
John - let me know if that works for you. Those stars seem to be making their way around the club and have exploded in numbers in my 34g. I would love to get a harlequin but always stayed away because of the diet. I think having one in a nano could not be more ideal!

really? i was always under the impression that starfish would rarely regenerate in captivity, especially SSS.

Just wanted to clarify that in my experience these guys are not a typical pest that you can pin point the origins of and blame any individual for giving it to you. IE no one in the club transferred them to someone else and started a chain reaction. If you are in the hobby you are going to come across these star fish. I’ve seen them live in stagnant buckets of water for weeks on end and seen them as small as 1mmX1mm. They come in on our LR and are present in every LFS that carries salt water animals. Once your coralline starts to take off so will they. They typically don’t bother anything, but the coralline.
I still really don’t think of them as a pest at all and to many people knew to the hobby they are one of the coolest parts. Back when I worked for an LFS we have several costumers that would come in looking for and purchase the little star fish on a regular basis. I can’t tell you how many times clients of the company I work for make comments about the cute little baby star fish they love so much.
Regardless of what is said about the star fish, those shrimp are pretty freaking cool!
Hey Jon, I really don’t mind them in my tank because they are cool to see, but just trying to some how control the number of them. They haven’t been doing anything harmful, it’s just that they are everywhere.
Cool. If the pair stay alive long enough in a month or two you will have none. I saw a single one eliminate every one in a 225gallon tank. I am sure the two will leave practically none left in no time. If you lose the pair though they will return. Andy had lost his and the stars came back quick.
i love my little retarded ones. they are neat to see 3 legs then one with 6. i had seen my tang eat them and then spit them out. they must be bad tasting cause nothing would eat them. my tang would spit it right back out
Caught a glimpse of the shrimps tonight, took a pic of one of them
Also took pics of the female anthias, who are out and about and eating.
here’s the male in full living color
