Somebody got my brittle star...

Is your money on the:

Clown Trigger
Princess Parrot
Maroon Clown
Yellow TangPJ Cardinal

???

Trigger!?

id say trigger. they are georgous fish but pretty nasty from what ive read/heard/seen.

My first thought was the trigger as well, but the parrotfish seems to really enjoy picking at the rock. The trigger is very laid back, the maroon clown is WAY more aggressive.

Clown’s are territorial and usually wouldn’t consider an invert such as a sea star competition unless there was eggs to defend. It is normal behavior for a Parrot to peck at the rock this wouldn’t make me think it was the culprit, I am not sure how they do with inverts. The trigger may be laid back normally, but what happens when you dangle some krill in the tank? Different story when there is food involved and there is a good chance the trigger thought of the sea star as food. Hard to say, but I would say there is a very big change if you tried another sea star it would be considered food.

You know I was just about to pull him (serpent star) out and send him to the octo tank. Oh well, I don’t know how long they typically live, but I’ve had this one since I bought the 29g from Izzy’sreef about five years ago. What a shame.

Joe 5 years is about how long mine lived don’t know if thats the norm but maybe it just died from being old.

Totally possible. Hope the one I have lives longer than that, I’ve had it for about 4 years. :-/

Or the Nitrates just got to high in the tank. Sea stars are a lot my vulnerable to this then triggers and parrot fish. Perhaps it was just the first indicator that things were starting to go wrong.
