With the school year coming to an end we wanted to take a moment to thank all the interns who have been helping us out this semester. They’ve done a great job and we really appreciate all their hard work!
We have been working with Salisbury University and other local universities and high schools for the past 5 years now. The majority of our interns are biology students from Salisbury University and we have had up to 20 interns in a semester. Some of our interns work on independent or group research projects while others focus on learning about the care and maintenance of livestock in an aquaculture facility.
Our interns are supervised by Dr. Mac and our full-time staff members. Dr. Mac, the owner of Pacific East Aquaculture, is a veterinarian and all of our full-time staff members have a degree in Biology. This background provides our staff a unique perspective to work with and mentor interns with a wide variety of interest and long-term goals.
Our internship program is one of the ways we give back to our community. We also offer groups tours year round. Many teachers bring their students to our facility for a hands on experience and tour. Kids get to touch and observe different animals. There are also college groups that come in to our facility to learn about various topics such as running an aquaculture facility or learning about the diversity of corals and fish. Seniors groups, Girl and Boy Scout troups, and others come for facility tours and a first hand look at our livestock. And of course, we love having our local Reef Clubs in for Saturday Socials - lunch is on us! If you are a member of a group or local Reef Club and you are interested in touring our facility give us a call at 877-887-5224 and we will be happy to help you set this up.
We already have a great group of interns selected for this summer. If you or someone you know is in the area and would be interested in interning with us this Fall or in the future, send Alyssa an email at alyssa@pacificeastaquaculture.com. Thank you for reading!
