the clam thread got me thinking… if bright clams need more light dark ones need less, would this apply to sps corals as well, a dark sps needs less light then a light or bright colored one? it makes sense if you wear a dark shirt in the sun you are hotter dark absorbs more…
Not sure who told you the clam thing but some clam species require more or less, but never heard of a light colored maxi needing less light then a dark pigment maxi, but getting back to the corals my opinion of the corals is YES. I've had different corals do alot better under less intense light. My valida I had up twards the top of the tank as per ORA under Phoenix bulbs and the coral never colored up was always brown. I moved it down and as the lights got older and lost some of there intensity as they got older they went a 100 times nicer then any ORA pic I saw.
99% of the times you see SPS placement being high and under bright light, think that depends on the lights you use and the coral.
in the clam care posted here it said dark clams require less and blue clams require more it makes sense all my blue or bright clams are fully open the one dark one is open but not as much
I think it depends on placement with just about anything you put in your tank. All my clams are wide open. Corals will react differently according to their needs. Just like in nature, not all the eggs will become fully mature. The ones that find the ideal locations do really well. That is why we move our frags around to find the ideal spot for them to show us their best.
the reason i ask is the one dark clam won’t open as full as the rest should i give it a little less light? also one of my corals is like receding at the tips polyps are out on it but no growth and the tips are bleaching i put it on the sand a couple days ago, but it was doing good with growth then one tip turned tanish white and grew some algae on the white tip all the others looked normal one is deep purple with growth now all tips look pretty bad. it is a dark coral
which coral?
I’ll try to post a pic tomorro after work. It’s an acro don’t know what type it’s a coral not a frag. Some type of branching from dr mac
http://delreefclub.org/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=28&topic=5238.0 here’s an earlier pic not a great pic but it’s worse now it’s the first picture right side bottom it’s the larger coral with one whitish tan tip. Now all the tips look like that one and it’s traveling down. I’ve had it 2-3 months. I think I got it when we all went down to dr. Mac. I may have to frag it
check your water parameters, I think that can happen with low alk or mag, not sure.

As far as the clam depending on how they were in the wild, if there in between 2 rocks and grow that way, they may only be able to open that far. If the coral is bleaching on the tips may not be the light, check your params like John said, try leaving it on the bottom but gonna take a while for you to start seeing a positive difference. Failure shows up as quick as hours success or turn around takes months.
I did have lower alk than I wanted and calcium was a little low. You know what when I noticed a few tips bleaching I moved it and it fell over a few times so this didn’t help.
Alk dkh 8.2 added 10min to doser
Calc 425 added 10min to doser
Mag 1420
Trates 1-5
Po4 .04
Your alk, cal, & mag look fine. I was running my calcium usually alot higher but in the old tank I had ALOT more SPS then I do right now. If you moved them maybe give it a week or so and see how they look.
i moved it a few days ago and it looks bad but the polyps are still out like normal except the dying parts
heres a pic
I wish i knew, i have a couple looking like this ???
Tim, i was doing some searching last night, found this thread with info, but no clear answers…

could there be a flow problem?
The link explains my situation at least I know I’m not alone lol. Could be anything flow included other corals are happy may just be this particular species. I put it on the sand bed and it hasnt showed any changes which could be good. Because it seemed to get worse each day.
