Seems like a great time to get caught up on that occasionally done or frequently overlooked maintenance. I’ve been super behind on cleaning my glass and now it is covered in coraline.
My plan is to give it the ole razor blade treatment and then prune back the hair algae too. I think I’m going to also give the algae in my reactor a trim. I’ll post some after pictures when I’m finished.
Post up your before and afters!
How often should I “prune” the chaeto in my reactor? I’ve been doing it every month and so far when I open it up at the end of the month is chock full. I take out almost ALL of it, which may be why my PO4 jump up the week after my last such pruning. Should I be taking out less?

I’m hoping to rescape the right side of my tank in the next few days. I have been putting it off for ever. Need some more room for Acros.

I generally trim it when it runs out of room to grow. I trim it by half typically.
Start a tank thread and let us follow along!
Pics, please
Space for growth is always something I’ve worried about. I haven’t run into the problem yet though.
Hey Bill so glad to hear you are back in the hobby. Looking forward to seeing pics of your tank. If you want some frags, just let me know. Good luck with the new setup.

Welcome back to the addiction Bill. I’m sure when you are ready I will have some frags I could throw your way.

so the plan is to remove the right side and place this there as and island. Thoughts?
I like the old and the new
Is the new tower shorter? I think that would be a nice way to break up the scene if so. It also gives you some more options to mount frags on the wall of the tower to the left and give yourself more growing space. Overhangs are tough since you wind up with a lot of shade.
Yea it is shorter some. I figured the overhang would be good for some lower light corals.

Today is the day! I’m going to get in there and clean the glass. I scraped my knuckle pretty thoroughly over the weekend so I’ve been holding off while it heals (hopefully) enough to prevent lots of pain
I’m going to try doing a timelapse of it too. If I can get my little action cam to work. I’ll post pics and/or video after

Figured it was a good time to get my Red Sea diy kit put together so I don’t lose anymore fish. Time consuming but turned out decent still have to put the netting on the other half

That looks nice! Much nicer than the handmade screen lids we all used to make
OK, I got around to doing a few bits of maintenance yesterday.
First, I pruned the chaeto in my reactor. It was really packed in there. I should have done this sooner.
Next up was tackling the glass. I had a ton of coraline algae and just plain old hard stuff everywhere. I went at it with a straight-edged razor. I also got the timelapse to work! Check it out!
You’ll notice that my clownfish is attacking my hand the ENTIRE time I’m doing this. She was literally only going after the cut on my knuckle. One of these days… POW! TO THE MOON!
Here’s the final result:
