Sump plumbing

Alright, so I just picked up me first actual reed ready tank and while i was at it i ordered the r-200 sump. My ? is, how should i plumb this? I could hardline with PVC or just used the flex hose that comes with the eshopps sump…and I know jack diddily squat about anything plumbing related oooops

There’s no set way of doing it. You just want to make sure that there’s no obstacle so that it will drain OK. hard or soft piping is your preference.

Personally, I prefer pvc bc the barb fittings with flex hose creates a choke point with limits the flow. Just my .02

I like to run flex back to my tank from the pump so things don’t bind up. From the tank to the sump either works fine, but flex gives you more… well … flexibility. Only thing is I use flex one size larger then PVC, but I think I would be fine with the same size.

Another thing is I use 1/2 inch larger lines for draining since it is only gravity. On my tank I use 3/4 black tygon flex going to the tank, but the drain is 1 1/4 PVC.

Alright, so i just picked up my r-200 sump. I had to go with that sump due to the size of my skimmer. So…after getting it into place, from my drain from the tank, to the bulkhead to the filter sock is only a 9 inch span! … If i put a union in, then the pipe will be that much shorter … what would be my best option for this? I didnt realize it was going to be so close together.

The bulk head coming out if the tank, is it threaded on the inside or is a smooth hole allowing a fitting to be glued into place?

And same question for the sump?

Threaded end of bulkhead is sticking out of the bottom of the tank, and the bulk head to the filtersock has the threaded end sticking upward.

But are the bulkheads threaded on the inside or is it a smooth hole?? I guess it could be a barb fitting too.

Can you post some pics of what you have?? We can guide you better if we know what we are looking at.

This is a single overflow, so im wondering about the drain, since it is so close to the sump what would be my best way to plumb it together? Like i said in a previous post, it is only about 9 inches away.

Jamie I would plumb it with 1 line straight down to that back corner and that will cut out elbows and be more direct. My :TWOCENTS

With a true union ball valve as well. Should be plenty of space

Do you have any room to move the sump inside the stand? If so line it up as a straight shot. If not, use flex hose bigger than the pvc that will protrude from the bulkhead. Flex hose over the outside of the pipe that will go into the bulkhead. This will make sure it does not get restricted.

Spin the sump and hard pipe back across the top of the stand out of the way and keep it towards the back if poss so it doesn’t interfere with the cleanng of the skimmer,I had the same setup but on both ends of my tank.that worked for me
