How long has he been in there?
What other fish are you adding?
What other fish do you have?
How is your rock set up?
Planning on corals?
What will you do in a year?
How does he act now?
It’s all relative. He may be okay for a while, but probably will need a larger home soon. Good luck.
in the 55 i gunna say at least 8 months
royal grammer, yellow clown goby, maroon clown, 6 line wrasse, sand sifter, some dart fish, maybe somew angle
royal grammer, yellow clown goby, maroon clown, 6 line wrasse
reef style. probably about 100 pounds
yes softies, zoo, mushrooms, brain, frogspawn (later maybe sps)
?
pretty calm, always want food, always searching for food hangs out w maroon sometimes
Doesn’t sound overly stressed, it will be too much bioload for sps. If it’s okay now, I wouldn’t rush out to trade it. If things decline, be ready. Might be a little too much rock from a swimming room standpoint, but otherwise it sounds okay.
I dont know, Ive got Al’s of yeller tang and one of my misc. tangs, looks like a keyhole tang without the hole, in my lower 40 breeder size tang/fuge. its got a plenum sandbed so mabe 25 gallons of water. they get along fine. doing great. lots of hiding places though to keep them in their own spaces when they need to.
I’d say take it back. I’d only put a tang, especially a naso in a smaller tank just for QT purposes. I’d look into upgrading first, then look into tangs again.

Small tangs will do great in smaller systems. Heck, Mike has a small kole in his frag tank and with no LR and ive never seen a happier tang. Im even thinking about picking up a juvi to put in my new 34g for a year or so then throw him into the 75g. IMO, what it comes down to is this. Most juvenile tangs will do great in smaller systems. Some grown tangs will do great in smaller systems(4’) for the entire life given the right environment. There are always exceptions to the rule and ill do my best not to demonize someone that keeps a tank in a “smaller” system but i think a couple of good ground rules for keeping tanks are as follows.
no more than one tang per tank except for the largest systems(6’ 125g+)
only certain species of tangs should be kept in medium systems(4’ 55g-90g)
only juvenile tangs with a DEFINITIVE future home lined up should be kept in small systems
This is just my opinion and i welcome everyone to add there opinions as well as their experience keeping tangs.
BTW, i dont want anyone to call me a jerk or hippocrite if i throw in a baby tank in my 34g >LOL< PA gets some of the nicest tiny tangs in!
I completely understand people purchasing tangs for smaller tanks. Ken used to keep a hippo in a 20g! Yes wow a 20g(no one jump on him yet) Thing is he had a 75 on the other side of the room he could put it into any time and he was planning on upgrading his 75 to a large tank soon.
bz the trouble is can you upgrade you’re tank in the next two years? Powder browns will out grown even a 75 tank eventually.
It’s good you’re asking about fish stocking and you want to continue to do research on the fish you want to keep. Fish will live a very long time and all of them come with their own personalities. It’s difficult to decide which fish will likely get along with others in a confined space and not both you’re corals. Our tangs, though we may thrive for natural environments are far from it, especially when in the wild if a damsel or clown has a territory set up other fish can swim away. The other thing is we are putting animals in together from different oceans that may never meet other in the wild.
Keep asking questions. Do a little reading on each fish as far as size, diet, and compatibility. And perhaps google, “purple tang in with yellow tang 55gâ€ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ, or something similar to see if you can find others experiences. When I had my 75 FO set up I searched till I found 5 other people that had the same animals I had + the one I wanted and asked them how everything got along together and what order they were introduced to the tank and each other. Doesn’t take long to do a lot of research and these animals will be with you for a very very long time if you take care of them.

The teeny tiny ones are probably fine for a bit, but he’s talking about a three inch Naso in a 25. I think that’s excessive. I would find a smaller fish more suited to the tank for now and the future. But, if it works for him, what the hell.
Looks like it has enough room to swim for now. Problem is it will outgrow that thank, then the 55, then a 75/90. Will need lots of room when full grown, best to start planning ahead now.
i know they get gigantic. ive seen them at green banks. 12+ in. unfotunatly in a few years i might loose intrest. porbably not but u never know. what could u guys at premium give me 4 him??? how fast would he out grow the 55? i now see the error of my way verdict_in.
There are new hobbyists twice your age that either arent smart enough or dont care enough to get it. Very smart and mature decision. People that are unwilling to listen and learn will never succeed in this hobby. BTW…tank looks good man. I like your aquascaping.
