tang mixing in a 55
I was thinking that exact same thing then I pan down to find you had already posted. Who’s your daddy!
Granddaddy.

so what are some tangs i can start looking at? i want to avoid a yellow just because u see them everwhere. i like the sailfin
a purple(because i figure cant be to much different than a yellow)
i like a kole alittle
are there anyother relativly small tangs that have color?

Dude your tank looks sweet! What the heck was I doing when I was 13?

I get what you mean about the yellow tang. I felt the same way for a long time and i think a lot of other people have as well. However, i think you might change your mind as so many people do. There is something to be said for the boldness of their color, it really pops in a reef tank, and their personalities are hard to beat.

I thought i listed my recommendations before, but here you go again.

yellow
kole
convict
flamefin tomini
bristletooths(there are a couple of diffent species available)
chevron(if your parents love you)
black tang(if your parents really love you)
gem tank(if your parents really, really, love you and they win the lottery)

have you considered a foxface or maybe a med. angel like the swallowtail? either would make a really good centerpiece fish in a 55g

WOW!!! who has money like that! i am afraid of getting stung by a foxface. i will have to do some research on the other tangs. thanks Ian

i think i would rather have a flame or bio color dwarf angle

i want very bright tangs and fish in general. if i wanted dull & boring i would go to freshwater(some people do have nice FW tanks). would a coral beauty get to big for my aquarium. of course i would get a small one but ive read they prefur larger tanks.

How many fire fish can i keep in this 55? i figure if they grouped they would come on out.

I also want to keep 2 sand sifting gobys. i have a sweet under sand pipe system. ( origainly for snowflake eel) it runs almost the whole length of the tank. 1" diamator. 4 holes (figured good as burrows)

Does anyone have experence with pistol shrimps and gobys. would each goby get there own shrimp. would the 2 shrimps fight. would the two gobys fight over 1 shrimp?

2 engineer goby will go in the tank too. will there be any problems?

Thanks! Brett

PA has two different goby/pistol shrimp pairs for sell right now. They are awesome, i was watching the shrimp burrow for about 10min.

You can keep any dwarf angel no problem. i really like the flames as well but have never owned one.

As far as the firefish go, im pretty sure they wont school, but you might get two to pair off if your lucky. make sure you have a top on your tank for the firefish. they will jump sooner or later guarenteed. as far as their behavior goes, mine was pretty much always out and about, ive had two and the both jumped. one jumped through eggcrate :-?

i think your fish selection is pretty good although i would dial back on the gobies. i think diversity is the way to go and you can achieve this buy avoiding pairs and groups of fish. as far as a number overall, its impossible to say since it all depends on fish selection. size and behaviors vary so much.

if your going to go with firefish and get a top, i would ditch some of the gobies and get a flasher wrasse. ill give you what i think is a good fish selection for a 55g. they are all peacefull community fish with different sizes, shapes, colors, and behaviors. of course its just my opinion and fish i really like. im sure others can jump in different stocking lists.

1 flame angel
1 firefish(reg or purple)
1 fairy or flasher wrasse
1 or 2 clowns
1 green chromis or 1 cardinal(PJ or kauderns)
1 royal gramma or black cap basslet

all of the fish are very hardy and relatively inexpensive and easily bought.

ok so maybe a little over board lOl. what do u think about the coral beauty. I have no experence with it so any info is great. will the beauty be more agressive becaue it has turned into a dominint male and there are no female around? very beautiful fish just want some pointers.

i already have these fish for the 55 6 line wrasse,Y clowm goby, maroon clown, a pair of engineer gobys, a royal grammer, a mandarin.
i will get a tang,1 sand sifter maybe pistol, dwarf angle

not that i dislike chromic or the black cardnals my mom dosent. u also see them all over. the black cardinal is also ugly IM(moms)O i also figured if i cut down the non-show fish i could get another larger pretter fish.

i also like copper banded bfs. would it get to large for the 55.

the bio load shouldn’t be to much of a problem. between the hobs, cheato, protein skimmer, and carbon sock i should have enough filtration. well last post. good night.

hmmmm, i didnt realize you had so many fish already. i dont think you should add 3 more fish. i would add 1 tang or 1 dwarf angel. not both. nothing more.

how long have you had your 6 line and mandarin for?

Hate to be the spoiler of bad news, but I’d be careful with pygmy angles.

“You can keep any dwarf angel no problem” Especially if you don’t mind them eating you’re zoanthids… Do some searching on the forums for flame angles. I believe coral beauties may post the risk as well of nipping at corals.

Here is a quote from Scott Michael on Coral Beauties:
“Will occasionally nip at large-polyped stony corals and clam mantles.”

I usually warn people any fish in the Centropyge genus can be added to a mixed reef tank, but you have a 75% chance or greater they will sample some of you’re corals to death at some point. Feeding in large quantities with great variety can help curve you’re odds, but it also increases you’re chances of having Nitrate problems especially if you don’t have as much experience.

Copper banded butterflies require a 75g as a minimum when they are full grown and usually die with in a week of living in captivity if they make it that long. In my opinion I wouldn’t try one of these till much later on. I know of one couple that has kept one alive and they now say it is the bully in the tank and it eats their shrimp and feather dusters.

I would highly recommend separating the 6 line wrasse and the mandarin if possible and put the mandarin in you’re larger tank. Both will eat pods and the mandarin most likely will only eat pods. With both of them in the tank eating away the mandarin is not likely to get enough to eat even if it does occasionally snatch some prepared foods. It will take a long time for it to starve, but I would be shocked if it lived a full happy life in that size tank especially with the quick 6 line in their snatching up pods.

Don’t want to be a complete barer of bad news, so I’ll make another recommendation of something you can add. Have you thought about a Neon goby? Or perhaps if you wanted something a bit rare a shark nose goby? We haven’t had them at DPA for a while, but hope to have some with in the next 2-3 weeks.

As logans_daddy said as well a black cap basslet would also be a good addition. They aren’t as common and are really neat looking, but might possibly be a jumper.(I don’t have as much experience with them)

Keeping passing ideas by us and doing you’re research. If you want some more ideas there are a couple of books we keep at DPA you can flip through to get some additional ideas and quickly rule out the non-reef safe ones and the ones that require larger tanks.(Scott Michael is the name to trust their)

Let us know what you decide on and keep us updated,
Jon

Man I type long posts, lol.

the engineers and mandarin are in the frag. theres planty of pods between the crushed coral and cheato. ive had the wrasse since 10/25 also got the grammer that day too. i also like harliquen sweetlips but i think they grow too large and refuse to eat frozen or prepared foods.

the engineers are olny about 1 1/2 inches

how much is a flasher wrasse. have they been to premium?

i think im going with a canopy and retro t5’s. ill run a fan or two to help cool the lights. ill probably egg creat the back too.

There are MANY species of wrasses. On most of the lists we get they are the section that lists the most number of species. I have no idea what a cheap one would look like or cost, but some of the more expensive ones could be easily $100 on up. Will depend on the species.

Keep an eye on the Mandarin, it will probably eat all the pods in that tank soon and need to be moved.

Retro T5s are the way to go, love mine. We can get all the parts you need at DPA, but don’t have them all in stock, we can get them usually within a week. I like the ice cap parts, but they are top $. If you or anyone in you’re family is crafty and willing to help you could build you’re own canopy to save a little $.

the mandarins been in there since 10/30. very fat and happy. my dad is by no means a carpnter. i could easily get all the equipment but i wouldnt be able to put it together. its like flooding the bacement with out an ro/di
it’s possible but not probable

something like thiswould be sweet

very nice. i think its a mccoskers or a carpenters. they look similar and cost about the same…right around $40 i think. the long fin is also really nice in person and i think its in the same price range.

what would happen if i did keep the naso in the 55. my mom dosent see why green banks can get away with keeping gigantic fish in tiny aquariums.
the 3 main tangs im considering for the 55 are a sailfin, blue hippo, or purple. the 2 tangs that i really want are the sailfin or hippo. im not going to get a yellow because there ever where.
what happen when a tang get to big for a 55.

wow the picture bz posted above is one awesome colorful fish i never seen before. hummmmmmmm thats a maybe for me. i likey. time to do a little reading.
