Ok i finally fished getting my sump built and up and running. I had to make some modifications with the cabinet first. The back support brace was in the way so I had to cut it out and then add another on the outside of the cabinet. I added 2 to make it more secure. Then I was able to hook up the sump.
I also make some changes in the display. I drilled a hole in the return line pvc (Thanks Jon.) I put the overflow box on the complet opposite side (got that from Craig…thanks). I moved the coral to more optimum positions (off the sand bed). K-2 was added and moved the other powerhead to the center of the tank. The skimmer of course in underneath. I removed the two heater and will keep them out until the tempature drops.
I took the old carbon filter out and will use it as a water flow for my other water until I get my QT setup.
I have a crappy one in my opionion. I read some other places that it is ok but it is the skimmer you carry in store. I can’t think of it now. Not at home. I think it is the red sea one. It is ok but I think i need to step it up. Plans with equipment. Refractometer, lights T5 and skimmer in that order. That is the 30 day plan. Light and refract in 7 days. Keep the door open cause here i come. LOL
Ok live stock. I want a shrimp(cleaner), anemone (at least a year from now or more). A couple of guppys. Tangs would be nice but not in a small tank as mine. Definately more coral. I am in the process of researching that. I really have so many things I want but I want it be a nice tank so taking time (especially for me i have to work on patience but i think i am doing a good job)
Did you mean guppies(Poecilia reticulata) or are you still mixing some things up with your old fresh water stuff. You can do guppies if you want, dirt cheap to, but you’ll have to acclimate them to salt water and if it were me I would put something a little more colorful in since you’ve already spent the money to set up a salt water tank. Even if you wanted to do the guppies just cause they were cheap, save up your money and get something a couple months from now. Don’t go with cheap just so you can rush things.
Probably a good thing to stay away from a tang with that size tank. A shame though as they are perfect for reef tanks.
As far as skimmers go I know the store doesn’t have a large selection and we have been discussing which other ones to bring in, but I personally don’t know what to bring in. Let me know if there is one your looking for that we don’t have. I bought my Aqua-C Urchin and it works perfect for me.(so far that is the only high quality skimmer we have in the store and it is in the front cabinet.)
NOTE: Don’t rush out to the store today as we are sold out of refractometers. We hope to get more in tomorrow, but last week when we ordered the whole saler was out. Call tomorrow around noon and we should know by then.
BTW I know they are less then $75 and I am pretty sure they have been less then $60. I remember a lot, but prices on something I’m not in the market to buy don’t stick in my head for long.
What kinds of corals are you interested in keeping? If you arent really looking to keep SPS (small polyped stony) corals then you might be interested in some lights other than t5. I know there are quite a few people that have lights laying around for sale, myself included, so check out the for sale boards. For quite a bit less than a new fixture you can get a used PC (power compact) fixture that can support soft corals and LPS (large polyped stony) corals just fine.
I just got a new 65g tank and did all test runs checking for leaks and none well we just got done filling and now the drain is leaking. I’m not sure what to do now of anyone could give us a few a pointers on what to do next I would appreciate it
if the bulk head is leaking i would drain to low level to keep water off bulk. then you could dry off really good and apply bead of silicone and replace washer, retighten and let dry. should cure problem. if it is in a connection of hose or fitting you may have to replumb this connection agian. i am sure others will give some advise on this.
This is the return that is leaking not the overflow, correct? Does it go through a bulkhead or over the top?
Where exactly is it leaking?
Dry off the return and see which fitting is leaking. If you have any threaded connection I would look there first and if it is the threaded connection I would remove and re-tape. If its a slip coupler or elbow the glue job may have been poor. You have 2 options; you can turn off the return clean the pipe and silicone the fitting or replace the pvc altogether. A little tip a plumber friend gave me when connecting pvc where a specific design is needed; Use a marker and make a line on both fittings during the dry fit. When you apply the sealant (use primer) push the fittings together a give a 1/4 turn and turn the fittings back to line up the marks you made earlier. Good seal every time.
If it is leaking at a union it may be the rubber grommet in the fitting. Check and replace.
