Tank mates

I have a 90 gal reef

The fish I have are:

yellow tang
kole tang
purple firefish
blue damsel
coral beauty
bangai cardinal
anthias
algae blenny
coral banded shrimp
2 peppermint shrimp
ocellaris clownfish

Looking for ideas of new fish to add to the tank. Looking for something with bright colors. Any suggestion?

Hmmm?? maybe get rid of the blue damsel. they just pick on the passive fish. and bite your hand. then add a couple yellow or green clown gobies. theyare cool. just perch anywhere and watch. .

the damsel actually is pretty good. I haven’t seen it pick on anything. I would never be able to get him out of there. I do like the gobies.

I would go with a wrasse or hawkfish. A melanarus wrasse would give some unique color, pattern, and swimming behavior to the tank.

I was under the impression that a hawkfish is not reef safe. Am I wrong?

Hawkfish eat shrimp. I had one (a spotted falco) in one of my tanks, he was fine with the other fish, ate like a pig and did not bother the corals (other than perching on them) He did however relish eating shrimp I fed him. mostly ghost shrimp. You would be shocked what they can fit in their mouth.

Yeah that’s what I thought. I love the hawkfish though. I have a few shrimp in my tank. I have a huge coral banded that my 10 year old son would be devastated if it ended up being lunch for someone!

melanarus wrasse I believe is not reef safe either!

Found a link on Reef Central related to this.

Hope this helps

I read it and it seems more have had problems with the wrasse eating inverts than not. I am wanting to get a mandarin. I have been waiting for the tank and pods to increase enough to do so . A lot on that thread said the wrasse eats the pods. I dont want them competing for the pods.

Just know the feeding requirements for it. A fuge for pod reproduction is a very good idea. Captive bred specimens are available and not much more expensive. They are often more hardy, adapted to being captive and better eaters.

I have been doing my research on them and I know my tank is not quite there yet. But one day I hope it will be. I check at night time for pods and I see some in there but not enough for the mandarin yet. Where would you find a captive bred one from ?

I’m pretty sure charlie at DPA can get them. I don’t have as much knowledge of who carries captive bred down state but remember Dr. Mac - Pacific East Aquaculture has some captive bred fish at times. Worth calling them to ask.

abcd!! I will check into it
