Temperature

What temp is too high? I know you are suppose to keep it about 78 to 80 but with the heat the last couple of days the temp in my tank is 85. What do you guys do to keep the temp down on hot days?

I had mine as high as 88 and as low as 65 before, but not for too long of course. Day or two is when I usually discovered it being out of range. For high temp of course a chiller is a way to go, but if you want to go cheap you can freez a couple of 2 litter bottle (do not filled it all the way, leave 1/4 space in the bottle for expand) or couple gallon ziplock bags, double bag of course and float it in your sump. it should bring down the temp a couple of degrees. Continue till reasonable range. Also, take out some sump water so it won’t over fill when ever you put the container in.

thats what how I thought just wanted to see if anyone had other ideas or not. It is suppose to be cooler tomorrow so hopefully it drop back down where it belongs. Do you think this has an effect on the kenya trees perking back up? They are still not looking good. The coral I got from you looks great.

My tank gets around 82-83 on hot days because I don’t have alot of ventilation. I’ve found that inhabitants are more tolerant of higher temps (or low temps) as long as the temperature swing is gradual. You do not want to drop a bunch of icepacks in and drop the temp 8 degrees in 10 minutes.

As for your kenya tree, it’s hard to tell without a picture, but i’ve had softies sulk for over a week and then come back normal. My kenya tree shrinks up for a day or two at least once a month and then comes back. It’s hard to kill a kenya tree IMO.

Here is the pic of the kenyas. They have been like this for 3 days. They are not as hunch over as they were before. The did this before the temp in the tank went up. The other night I topped the tank off and the kenyas were fine when the lights went out. The next morning they were like this and have been ever since. Tested water and water parameters are fine.

Let me add that everything else in the tank is good!

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Kenya tree. They are hard to kill. Your water can be murky green and boiling and they’ll still be thriving. Give them a while, they’ll be OK.

Try looking for some info on fans. They have them now when the temp hits a certain number, the fans will turn on. I use 4 fans in my canopy to keep the tank cool. Check out Marine Depot.

The temperature between 70 to 80 is average for a normal tank.
But increasing from this size should be reduced with some
cooling affects.
