Ian, Jon has a gazillion hi res pics from his scientific carabean reef survey trip about a year ago. He had a great opportunity through DSU and took it. Much like Yogi Bera took his fork in the road. if you tickle him a little i think he has a link, somewhere to some of his pics. he did a fine slide show of a few at a meeting last year.
But yeah! rebreather technology is the harmonious way to dive with the least disturbance to the reeef critters. Just very technical. I got a friend with a dive masters license. got it in Belize. but hasnt dived in a while. he’s working as a construction engineer in Afghanistan right now. (dessert sand sharks?) making some dough to retire at his new home in Thailand. on an island. He says there are great unknown reefs there just off his front yard. Im talking to him about his setting up a reef farming gig there some day… I hope… I hope… I hope.!!! then he can send me nice corals and fish.
till then, nothing but camel chips to send…
Not a bad retirement home!
Jon, We’ll have to check those pics out over a few beers.
Rebreathers have come a long way, but it is still the same old technology. Bags, hoses, checkvalves, scrubber, and O2 and you’ve got yourself a rebreather. There are some very nice units coming out soon that will rock the market a little bit and bring it more mainstream, one day (5+ years) there will be Open water (your first scuba class) rebreather courses.
They are the most beautiful and natural way to experience the underwater realm. Nice warm moist air, silent, unlimited (kinda) air supply and time, how can you go wrong? It is amazing the amount of wild life you can see on a rebreather as opposed to open circuit. If you go rebreather diving with open circuit people, wait a few minutes and let them get out of site and watch the reef explode with life. Sharks bump you with an ‘excuse me’ type of look on their face instead of being feared by your loud blast of bubbling mess. Think if the bubbles scare sharks you can only imagine what more it scares the small timid wildlife.

I have pictures of Belize and Tobago if your buying
Yes, rebreathers are a non intrusive way to dive and see stuff in the wild. Like once while on an extended fishing trip through the Caribean with some friends on a trawler, we did a lot of snorkling around little islands on the way. We could put on fins, mask and snorkle and swim completely around lots of the little ones, like less than a mile around. Nice vertical reef wall around them full of life. I could look down from the surface, and see zillions of fish near the wall or coral heads in 10-20 feet of water. Take a breath and dive, and POOF! they all disapear. But just hover 5 seconds a few feet away from the wall, holding my breath, and they all pop out in the open again. Really nice, saw some 18 inch long puppy faced puffer fish swim right out and look me in the eye a foot away. Huge Queen angel fish too. and tons of damoisels and stuff. But i could only stay down there a few seconds. I can see rebreathers are the best.

Lol, ok I’ve got some pictures of my own! I’ll buy the first two rounds…
Ken…between that post and the ‘dream job’ post your making want to take a vacation sooner
Life is all about vacations. The more the merrier, till they blend into one big vacation!! Then what to do?
Never had the heart to shrink the pictures down to website size and even if I did these crazy people that still use 56K would complain that there wasn’t a low res version.
I actually want to find an inexpensive way to make decent looking posters out of the photos. I think they were 10 megapixel, so shouldn’t have a problem with the original photo quality.

I have it from a good source that the notorious 56K hold-out is upgrading to cable.
Next thing you know, he’ll be giving up his 78’s, 45’s, and 8-tracks … But I thinkn he’ll holding out on the Beta-max

78’s? I’ve seen 33’s and 45’s but thought 78’s were a made up speed.
What’s an 8-track? YahoO
Technically 33-1/3 … there’s also 60, 66, 71.29, 76.59, 80 , and 120 rpm as well.
Can you say … nerd …
