Looks nice. I’m hoping to set up some similar shallow tanks for grow out as well. Are you using any power heads or just the return pumps?
Thanks Jon, in the soft coral frag tray, I have just the return for flow. But in the SPS tray, I added a small power head for some increased flow.
cool, looks nice…
i really like what you have going. i kind of want to put my 90 in the basement but im afraid of what the eletric bill will look like; it there a large difference in heating the tank upstairs?
what did the tubs cost if you dont mind me asking?
Thanks Marchingband and bz, my two grow out trays are in my unheated garage. Both of them spill over into a plastic bin (sump) on the bottom. You can see it in the pic with the flash. And In the sump, there are two heaters, which keep the trays well heated. Don’t really think the heaters are that much of a cost as are the 2 m/h lights.
I bought both of them at Walmart, believe they are rubbermaid trays used for storage under beds, thus the low profile. They were @ $15 each, if I remember correctly, maybe cheaper.
Many people have used similar containers and had them get brittle with age and they cracked open spilling all there contents at once. Some have said they may leach chemicals into the tank, but I’m not sure they do so enough to be a concern though. I’d be more concerned about them splitting open. Not saying it inevitable, but possible.
I too have heard about both of those problems using rubbermaid for holding tanks, but I am going to replace them as soon as I can afford to get better containers. Thanks for the info.
I’m sure you know, but just to include it hear for anyone else reading along, food grade rubbermaid containers are supposedly fine such as the Brute series and the Structural Foam Stock tanks.
What about heaters mealting plastic?
the heaters are located in the sump, so they are always in water.
You got the right thing going there Houndsbayman, simple frag tanks made with sterilite storage bins. And hey no problem with heaters if you buy a serated sleave covering for them. they dont sit on the bottom. I like your system.
You do good work,
and your corals show it!!!
Merry Christmas!
Thanks Ken and happy holidays to you
