we ( john and jen) have been having realy good luck with sps under vho. 110w 48 inch 75 gal tank.
just wondering if any one else was keeping sps under vho or any ones thoughts about longterm secuess. the pics are of a birds nest show growth since the jan meeting i feel like this is a decent amouth of growth in this time frame. also this frag is about halfway down the tank. we have some other sps higher up also doing great.
just want some insite form other reefers and maby start a good light brawl :BEER
stats SG 1.026 cal 420 alk 2.3 meql amm 0 no2 0 no3 2.5 ppm ( no fish in the tank at this time we lost are yellow tang but we feed the lps every other night)
Hey guys My opinion is, if your getting growth like that, dont change ANYTHING. Obviously you are providing plenty of light for them and they are taking off like crazy.
thanks wasnt planing on it. just wondering if there was any one else in the club running vhos and keeping sps.
i could fit 2 diy t5 in the hood i might do this down the road but im not rushing it.
Ken has grown SPS under VHOs for years. As long as you don’t keep them too low in the tank and keep your flow, temp, Ca, Alk, Mg, and the nitrogen cycle in check you should be fine.
I agree with icy things seem to be going well so I wouldn’t change too much unless you plan on taking on more difficult to care for species that require more light.
any thing i should not try under vho? i have a few monties and acro the birds nest and stylophora. also have a few diffrent millis. all doing well. also wout it be worth it to add 2 t5s to my 4 vho. figured woud be the best bang for my lil buck. been thinking about that a while figured if i do i might just run them 6 hr a day. but would start with one hr in the middle and work my way up as to not freek anything out.
Oh Oh, i guess i have to chime in here. yes, VHO are my lights on a 75 and a shallow 12inch deep frag tank of the same foot print as a 75. acros, softies an everything grows good. nice colors too. i notice though that water clarity makes a big difference . like if my water gets too green with algae , well, that screens the light and things dont look as good. so VHO is a good light source, not the strongest, but ok, but water clarity is very important too, so that the light gets to the corals. so good filtration, nitrate reduction and circulation round out the chances of sucess.
I too have a bright green birds nest like yours. I got a frag that size a year ago this month from a member on his tank tour. it has grown to 4x2x2 inches at least and very bright and fuzzy like your frag. pretty fast grower. under VHO. He had an unfortunate crash last year , but is recovering. he lost his birds nest, but i have promised him half this clone from his same genetic stock to replant. He has a super tank and is a very good reefer. I hope he’s ready soon for the frag to replant. That is one of the purposes of the club, to sustain genetic diversity. we all encounter problems now and then, but if we spread the stock around, it can come back around when the unforseen happens. we share and care.
