I have 3 vortechs and havent played with them all that much but i dont think you can switch between modes. You seem to have the gist of its capabilities.
Why do you like the pulse mode? Are you able to get the wave action going because i could not. Their demo videos are awesome and i think in an empty tank it would be fairly easy to replicate but i think its tough to do in a tank filled with rock and coral. Personally, i love the reefcrest mode and leave it full blast 24/7 on all three tanks. My 265g has two mp40 with the wireless drivers. They play off each other very well to create some pretty random water movement.
im not sure why but i really like the pulse, i can get the wave going a little bit…the way i have my other powerheads/return helps also…
i just took a video using my laptop webcam of the flow i get from it…im going to post it here in a second…
once some suckers pay up for these tax returns ill be buying my mp40w upgrade…cant wait…
for some reason I thought in the manual it said u could run a dual day/night setting, but I could be wrong, I cant find my booklet anywhere…anyway, ima throw the vid up ina sec.
Shawn if you think you get pretty random motion with them on all the time and have had them like that for more than a couple of weeks then try something else. I would be willing to bet if you put them on varying speed while the lights were on you would see significant sediment and random crap floating in the water which would either be eaten or carried off to your filtration.
Sorry for the semi off topic longballz. I personally have never programmed the vortex. Installed them, cleaned them and all, but never took the time to program. Suppose I would though if I spent that kind of money on my own tanks.

Jon - the reefcrest is varying speed. the way these work is that you can adjust the maximum output overall and then set the mode. the reefcrest mode will vary from 10-100% power in a very random way. if i set my max power at around 50% then the reefcrest mode would vary between 5-50% of max power but still the same ratio between peak and valley. because i have mine at max output the reefcrest mode will be at full power when it fully peaks.

I haven’t programmed them, so didn’t know the lingo. When you say you left them on full blast and that they play off of each other for random movement it sounded to me as if you pointed them at each other to make them bounce off in random motions like the used to suggest before programmable power heads and wave makers were common place.
This is my pump on short pulse…i also have my mag pushing the return…
there are two k-2’s also hidden in the corners behind the LR, let me know what you think
edit: This is about 80-90% of the full power of the 20[/quote]
Nice video. You really do have some nice movement going with the short pulse. I tend to change the mode on mine about 1 time per week just to keep the flow changing. I like lagoon mode the best I think.
