Vortech vs. Tunze

Yes with better rock I would be fine blowing strait. But I like the option to disturb the surface or the sand bed and if corals grow up higher I can redirect flow. It’s like buying a car and saying the seat is comfortable in this posisition weld it, maybe in a year you gained weight or bought new shoes lol and now your stuck in that posisition. I know you like analogies like this. ::thumbsup::

Oh yeah I love analogies. (though I know several of the officers moderators HATE them) :smiley: :wink:

Here is a question for you. If your corals continue to grow and you do not upgrade your tank or frag your corals… where will your fish swim? I suppose it is a non issue if you plan to create a solid block of aragonite, but many of us keep aquariums with both fish and coral, so we need to keep some swimming room.

So in the videos with waves you do not think there is enough movement at the surface? :wink: lol If you were able to point the powerhead up how much more could you get? Aside from creating a water fountain that would blast fish into the air and water all of over your lights…

Not just arguing for the sake of it, but it also helps me think things out as well. Helps me justify my choice on my tank and recommendation to my clients. Now hopefully I do not dramatically change my opinion once I try out some Tunzes, but I doubt it.

As of currently I believe:
Tunzes when you need something silent.
Vortech when you care more about flow and health of the animals and aquarium.

Lol

I need a bigger tank
Ditto.

But question. If you started over and had a better rockscape would it not be less important to point the power heads? So if making a suggestion to someone else who is starting from scratch or who has an open rock scape, doesn’t the “pointing in any direction” become a mute point?

Again using this example how could you improve the flow by pointing the flow in any particular direction?

Asking questions in all seriousness not just to make a point. As I said I will be experimenting with Tunzes soon. I likely would not be experimenting if I did not have the chance to on my clients aquariums.
i doubt anyone will want to fill their tank 2\3 full and make 10" waves. ok say you had an acro growing up in front of the pump your option is slide it back or forward but with any powerhead that rotates you could angle it. Its fine you like vortechs better I prefer more options. Why if you like vortech so much, switch to tunze? IMO i wouldn’t even try them vortech are good I won’t deny it i always wanted one but while researching i chose tunze. I just wrote the list of good things that pointed me toward tunze. I did have a transformer go bad on my tunze and had to send it back for warranty. but lynchie both are great it is just what you plan to do with it.

Will, did you ever decide?

Well John honestly no verdict_in but I do feel close though. I have called and spoken to both companies and I have to say IMO Tunzes sound like they are a stronger build, and the customer service is awesome! Pluse it is quite 10 decibels more then the vortech. But on the flip side they are pretty big and you need to buy a controller. Where the vortech is much smaller, and is plug & play nothing else required. But i have read in reviews that people hate the noise, also their customer service is terrible.
I almost see them to be like the iPhone Vs. the Droid, vortech Vs. Tunze, vortech being like the iPhone much easier to use and understand, then Tunze being the droid. It can do all the same things possibly better but not so easy to program or set up. But maybe that’s just me ::rofl::
I think the only way I can truly decide is to see them both in person so I can see just what they can do and the actual noise levels. Dunk has me covered for the tunzes, anyone with a MP40 in there tank that i could come admire for a bit if I’m not to distracted by the coral ::drool::

tunze = iphone
Vortec = DROID!!!

Droid can do more :slight_smile:
But on a note about the noise. My mp20 which is older sometimes is a little noisy but not bad at all. A lot of the noise has to do with positioning the wet side with the dry side properly. My mp40 does not get noisy unless you use it for the full flow and use wave mode.
For a 75g tank you don’t need to max it out. I use mine about half now in reef crest mode and the mp20 is about half to 3/4 also in reef crest and I rarely ever hear a noise. Honestly the skimmer and over flow is louder then the vortecs.

It is always a hard decision to make when it comes to spending real money. Many people have had very successful tanks with both pumps and even the cheaper pumps.
