water barrel

i was offered a 15 gallon barrel for free but it used to have mineral spirets in it can it be cleand and used for salt water storage for my reef tank and what would i clean it with?

I wouldn’t use it. I think if it’s not classified as “Food Grade” it runs the risk of leaching chemicals back in to your water. Considering Mineral Spirits are also called “Paint Thinners” I definitely wouldn’t risk it.

Food Grade containers are inexpensive enough that there is no need to risk contaminating your tank with chemicals.

Brute trashcans, believe it or not, are food grade containers. You can pick up a 75g can for under $40 at Lowes. You can also get the wheel base for easy transport and a lid.

I agree always use food grade barrels.

might want to check the price on the brute I think the 75 gal is close to 200 bucks

Damn never realized they were that much.

Doing a quick Google search I learned that DNREC offers rain barrels fairly cheap

http://www.dnrec.delaware.gov/News/Pages/DNRECoffersrainbarrelsatdiscountpriceinMay.aspx

You can replace the hose spigot with a bulkhead and plug and you’re good to go for $66.

I may get one for the garden next year.

55g “Economy Open Top Drum” (use the word economy lightly) for $80

15g for $32

Just some ideas. Anything other than something that used to hold chemicals will be better.

What about those rubbermaid squarish storage containers? Usually around the 18 gal size or so. Picked up just about anywhere for 10 to 15 bux. Those SHOULD be food grade I suppose…

Oh come on. Craig was thinking of a 44g brute for $40 note a 75g brute. If someone was thinking of using a 15g container a 44g brute would be plenty. They also sell 20g brutes and 32g brutes. Lowes or HomeDepot. The same dolly works for all three, but they are $32.

I have a local guy I can get 50 gallon food grade plastic drums from if anyone is interested in his phone number let me know. They have to be cleaned some still have residual stuff…The ones I got from him had horseradish in them. I think they were like $25.00 to $35.00ea. He is in NJ zip is 08085 about 15 minutes from the Delaware Mem Bridge
