Water change /vacuuming

I normally would sift up the crushed coral to get the nasty stuff. But I just bought a decent size crew to help . and they are so little that they could easily get sucked up and flushed away. So my question is do you /would you see how they fair or still sick up the bed of the tank.

What type of clean up crew are you talking about? What kind did you buy?

I’d replace the crushed coral with a different substrate. If a SSB (~ 1" - 1 1/2")go with something like CaribSea Special blend and vacuum every WC, if a DSB(3+") go with a sugar sized oolite and leave it alone.

i currently have a all snail clean up crew and have a few shrimp.

If you got Nassarius sails there gonna try and burry but with crush coral there not gonna be very happy and may be difficult for them to get down in there.

With crushed coral you are gonna half to vacuum it alot otherwise the ditritis is gonna build up and cause problems. It works but may be a good idea to think about replaceing it. I ran crushed coral when I started my first reef tank about 25 years ago and it worked just alot more up-keep and maintance.

I wouldnt worry about vacuum your snails up you will see them it they do happen to get in the tube.

All the other snails should be on the glass or rocks (astrea, turbos etc) and same form the hermits but they can still be seen scampering around the bottom if they are

Yea I had been considering trying to switch to sand. My biggest concern is the little Dwarf Ceriths since they are so small.

Also if I do switch should I worry about getting all of it even under the live rock? Is it that big a deal or just get the majority of it

like most thing it takes practice, I would suggest a Aqueon gravel vac and practice, holding it so you can control the flow by pinching or bending the drain tube.

if you change it no need to get it all out and I would do it in half or thirds you could even leave a patch in there in case you ever get any burrow builders.

Yea that’s what I was thinking. Don’t want to cause a panic by doing whole tank. Does it matter what type to get. Probably just gonna get the cheapest caribsea

Caribsea is fine nothing wrong with it. They have several different grain sizes and colors.

That’s what I’m asking. Is there a general preference for size? Or is it basically pick one and go with it.
