I have only seen one tank with the wave maker installed. I love the idea and the concept, but not sure of the functionality. Are these one of the extras that we could really do without? Is there more then one make out there? Any 1 better then the others?
I found a brand new Wave2K system for a decent price and am looking for opinions from anyone that has used them, or has seen them in action. Worth it? or gadget?
I like my Wave2K wave maker. I like the idea that I do not have all those power heads in the water and it is cheap to use. It only use 1.3 watts to run the motor. It also gives you the needed currents (water circulation) for your corals.
Hey I am following along with this thread.(even though I won’t get any kind of e-mail or anything when there is a new reply will I?)
I had been planning on doing a DIYS wave maker in my new system design, but had to simplify things a bit because of time constraints.(wait to see all the crazy stuff I come up with once I’m doing this full time)
(Below written before reading Tom’s response)
My opinion is that we can do with out them probably, but I have been starting to wonder if there may be a way to construct them so that they are more energy efficient then running a large pump for a closed loop constantly. (Though a close loop is almost definitely better energy wise then little power heads.) I think the answer to the energy side of things is that a really simple, but large, ugly, and loud, wave making device will use less power and there is a slope to using more energy if you want silence and are working with limited space. A dump bucket takes little more energy then a regular return pump.
Perhaps some wave makers do use less energy and if they would be replacing multiple power heads perhaps considering that would offset some of the upfront cost concerns. Might also want to consider the tanks location and noise factors. Craig you said the new tank you will probably be placing in your living room?
Jon it is going in the living room. Assuming of course I can sell this house, otherwise it will stay in the basement. Aren’t you and Steph looking for a bigger place?
Noise was definitely a consideration, all the reviews I have been able to find talk about how quiet it is, I thought I remembered Tom’s making enough noise to mkae me notice it, but I didn’t notice Mike’s when I was at his place. So it may have just been that I was paying too close attention to Tom’s.
It will be in the family room but not right next to the couch either, depending on which house we buy it will more then likely be on the other side of the room…nothing a good surround sound system won’t drown out
After seeing the WAVE2K running on both Mike and Toms tanks, i think they are great wave makers to animate your soft corals and pulse smooth flows of water past the hard corals. It really seems much better than simple pin point power heads. but I think you still need other motive force to circulate water around the tank. other wise the W2K justs pulses water back and forth in the same space. that is fine if other circ forces are used too, i think. to keep the tank stirred and clean.
I would add a maxijet or two with the mods to make them propeller type water movers. that would provide smooth, high volume circ around the tank to complement the WAVE2K back and forth water pulse.
Personally, I think the Meat/Poultry/Vegitarian and the Organic vs. Non-Organic portions of this “survey” are a crock of steamy, stinky carbon emmision.
I found it interesting that just by living in delaware we tend to be higher than average in the houshold waste area.
I used to be pretty anti organic, especially working for Dupont AG. as I have done more reasearch into the movement and learned more about the total down stream affects of our current systems I have had to begrugginly come to the conclusion that organic really does have a major impact in numerous areas in our society. in fact organic really tastes better too. apples actually taste like apples.
if you have netflix, take a look at king corn and the future of food for some interesting points of view…

Hi guys, This tanks gotta go, how about $25 or make me a deal, trade or somethin. But iv moved into a smaller house and theres barely enough room for my main tank.
he wanted it, but something happened and he wasnt able, I told him I would hold as long as I was still in the old house in middletown, But we are moving and I just dont have the room in the new house. The offer is still there for him, but its gotta go. In the old house I had a garage and a basement, now I have neither. so it kinda sucks. but its all good.
