I just picked up this handsome fella a stunning moorish idol and I just started reading up on their dietary needs and I am no less than terrified.
Has anyone had success with one before?

I have never had one but I hear that they are extremely hard to keep alive.
Good news is he accepted some food at the store and a little more when I released him

Thats good!!! Good luck with him. Let us know how he does!
Good luck with it. I don’t know of any that have lasted to a year unfortunately.
When I get home I’ll put up some pictures

I don’t want to harsh your buzz about this fish, but to say this is an expert level fish is an understatement. I really think you should take it back. I know of no one who has successfully kept these in captivity.
Mike at the Fish Bowl has tried several in his display tank in his store with no success
What type of food was it eating at the store?
Butterfly and angel frozen food and reef spectrum pellets

If its eating pellets then its going to be easier, but will need sponge in their diet somewhere and need to be fed as often as possible.
There are isolated success stories online, but many experts have difficulty with this fish.
Didn’t you get another new fish recently as well? You want to give adequate time for your bio load to adapt between adding fish otherwise your parameters will go unstable in the short term.
My last fish I added was my fox face over a month ago.
The frozen food that it was eating in store has sponge mixed in. I am feeding between 4-5 a day

Just tried one of each of these it has a vegetable drop bloodworm drop and brine drop and the idol went nuts after they started falling into the water column.
So far he is doing pretty well(I think)

I woke up to a strange noise coming from my tank last night. Turns out one of my circulation pumps started drawing in water and sucked in my moorish idol. He didn’t make it through the night

Sorry to hear that, always remember though, a powerhead will never take down a health fish.
Fish can appear healthy, when if fact they are very sick and weak, and can go from swimming to not being too in a very short amount of time.
When I removed him from it I got my hand stuck to the output. It is a 3200gph pump. I’m not saying he might not have been less than 100% but I doubt any fish could get away from something that strong drawing them in
