Ok, so today I was looking at the tank and for a few days I’ve noticed this small black dot (maybe 1/4" diameter) on a piece of live rock that I just got from Dr. Mac. Well I took a real close look at it today with the naked eye and it looked like it moved, so I grabbed my camera with the 100mm macro lens and decided to take some pictures of it… well when I focused on the spot where I was almost positive this black dot was, there was nothing there, so I backed away from the camera and looked and it was GONE! Then it appeared from inside the rock and inside of this perfectly round hole… this thing is freaky looking! It seems to have 2 mouths, one has some pretty nasty looking teeth and the other looks like just an opening that opens and close at the same time as the mouth with teeth… Im hoping one of you can ID this thing for me… here is the picture… not a great picture but one of the better i could get without moving the rock closer to the glass…

what do you all think this thing is? Like I said, its only about 1/4" in diameter.

bobbit worm??? kinda tough to see really…
I am not real sure… he doesnt look to have the ability to open up like that, and is in the rock, not in the sand. Not sure if that matters or not. I am going to try to take a better picture of him in a few minutes… going to set the rock up so that I can get it closer to the glass… not sure if that is going to help or not.
Ok, here is a little better pic… he stays exactly flat with the rock… but I can’t say that he stays like that all the time… cause I do not know.

Sure its a worm?.. when you said something I though of either flat worm, maybe some kind of nuisance coral? I’ve got a couple of those green zoos in my tank that I have no idea what they are but they are there.
nah, def. not a bobbit worm… i have no idea man. keep an eye on it. those look more like filtering fingers than teeth… kinda like a tube worm sort of. u find some of the weirdest stuff!!!
Well, this thing retracts down INTO the rock if you get too close to it. Almost like it is a tube worm of some sort. The pictures I am taking are the farthest I have seen it come up the tube. Never seen it out of the tube yet. I have a flash light with a red lens now, so I am going to be keeping a close eye on it.
Hoping someone in the club can ID it or point me to a good spot to check it out. I am going to research south asian live rock, to see if anyone else is asking questions on the other reef sites…

You aren’t kidding… But this is exactly why I decided to get into a saltwater tank. It seems like something new every day! HAHA.
The two-mouth thing makes me think Spirobranchus worm, just not all the way out yet. But really, who knows?!
